Right now it's Balatro, but there's a chance it gets upended in the back half of the year (or Hades 2 releases)
If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?

Hopefully Dreadwolf because that means it's a very good game :)

JRPG is fine to me. I know what people mean when they use the term.
Donny: Are they gonna hurt us, Walter?
Walter: No, Donny. These men are cowards.
While we are putting our cards on the table (heh) about this I love Balatro, I think its one of the best fundamental gameplay loops in years. It doesnt top Rebirth as my game of the year so far but its close. Also looking forward to getting into Animal Well and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes as far as indie games go!
I just decided to change this sig.
Blaaaaaaargh azuarc
Kinda torn on rebirth atm, has plenty of highs but also quite a few lows

overall think I liked remake and XVI more a few days after beating it but it might change upon settling/deciding to do more optional stuff later

truthfully if we're talking about games from critical reception i'm scared at the prospects of palworld swooping in from left field to win since it's pretty inarguably the biggest release this year has seen for better or worse (sure it's early access but i feel like it's not impossible they literally make an exception specifically for it)

I think PUBG was still in early access when the game awards started that year

but I dunno I think all the interest in Palworld shifted to Helldivers

peak player counts suggest heavily otherwise lol (450k vs 2.1 mil)
Lets give it to a DLC this year

Pal World sold a lot but didn't review that well. Even putting aside any controversies, it probably wouldn't get nominated. I haven't like read through the reviews or anything. I could see the game being unfairly rated due to the Pokemon knock off thing but that's probably not a good sign for nominations as well.
My bracket looked like random picks compared to his.
Congrats to azuarc for winning the GotD 2020 Guru Contest!
Yeah, Game Awards nominees/winners are decided by journalists/industry people. There's zero chance Palworld gets a nomination.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
I can't think of a nomination that Palworld has a shot at.
Best indie/debut indie I could see it being nom'd for.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
Palworld lol
Phantom Dust.

Metaphor: ReFantazio. If it's in the same tier as Persona 5 that is. Could legit win this year.

Also, Mina the Hollower could be a nominee as well.
Video Games are pretty cool.

Does that have a release window? It was delayed from 2023, right?

Man, you guys aren't even trying any more. It's not unreasonable it shows up before December. No release date, sure, but there have been a few signs that at least it's not vaporware. If you want an unreleased indie to swoop down and sweep the awards, that's your candidate...hopium or not.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
Is there any interest in Star Wars Outlaws or is the Ubisoft logo scaring everyone away

There's plenty of interest, but nothing about it looks like it'll be the best game of the year. Or do you disagree?
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
The game looks good but Ubisoft have had a single nominee in history, Assassins Creed Odyssey, and that only snuck in there thanks to the awards increasing the nominees to six and Smash Ultimate being ineligible. To make it Outlaws would probably have to be Ubisofts best game since Assassins Creed Brotherhood. No pressure then!
I just decided to change this sig.

Rayman Legends and Origins both came out after AC:B >_<

(and Prince of Persia: The Last Crown is the best Ubi game of the last ten years already!)
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
Fair enough, I forgot about those two, particularly Legends. Also The Lost Crown is probably a better shout for a nomination than Outlaws though it probably misses.

I was just looking at upcoming games and saw a lot of discussion about it, dont think theres enough to make a judgment call but was just surprised nobody brought it up until I realized it was Ubisoft.

Bloodlines 2 and Stalker 2 are interestingish games with high ceilings and incredibly low floors given how much dev hell they have been in

A game has to actually be released to win GotY
MZero , to the extreme

Considering Phantom Liberty got a few noms last year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Shadow of the Erdtree somewhere.
Still the number one reason for the success of the Internet.

It was. It should come out this year, though assuming everything is going well.
Video Games are pretty cool.
After one google search for Mina the Hollower...just based on superficial reasons, I don't think a 2-D pixel furry game is going to 'wow' the game awards as a whole, even if the game ends up amazing. Those are negative modifiers.
It's Reyn Time.
Mina the Hollower could be nominated for best indie but it would have to have an absurdly good reception to be considered for GOTY.
If Hades II comes out it should take it. Otherwise probably something coming out in the back half of the year that reviews well (perhaps Indiana Jones?). Rebirth would probably win if held today.
We are living our lives
Abound with so much information
Actually, if Dragon Age Dreadwolf is even slightly decent it could win. The Game Awards fucking loves WRPGs, and it wouldn't be the first time Dragon Age coasted through a soft field.
It's Reyn Time.
I'm not confident that Hades II sees a full release this year.

Do we have confirmation that Dreadwolf is coming this year? I would think that's at least a decent bet for nomination, though who knows, it's been in development hell.

Party based game, story focus.
And kind of turn-based! They both fit neatly under ARPG but then some people consider that a synonym for Diablolike.

Nevermind, seems it's only set to be 'revealed' later this year. Which probably means a 2025 release.

The Shovel Knight pedigree ought to count for something.

Yeah, I think Dreadwolf is a 2025 game.

My guess for 2024 is that we get FF7R, maybe one or both of Hellblade II or Avowed if they're good, and then everything else is just stuff we don't realize will be awesome yet or that we don't know about yet. And maybe Balatro sneaks in since it's a thin year.
This year's so weak so far with nothing eye popping in the horizon that it might just end up being Rebirth.

It was revealed years ago! Same circumstances as, say, Assassin's Creed Shadows, which was originally revealed years ago, then got a full reveal yesterday with the release date.

For me (so far) it should be Balatro or Another Crab's Treasure, however in reality it will be something more mainstream like Rebirth.

I think it would too. Shovel Knight is very beloved. Mina also looks super good from previews, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if it's GOTY-level good.
Video Games are pretty cool.
Shovel Knight doesn't have anywhere near GOTY pedigree. Mina the Hollower would have to be explosively popular to be anywhere except best indie. I don't see it.
Shovel Knight may not be GotY-caliber...but it turned one well-received game into three, got him into Smash, and might be the most successful indie game from Kickstarter besides Undertale.

I contributed to Mina and see room for Yacht Club Games to ride some new game-momentum...but ultimately, despite this respect, I still don't expect GotY-conversations for this upcoming game. Maybe, but I doubt it.

To be fair, Shovel Knight was console exclusive to the Wii U at the time. That definitely hurt it back then. If not for that, it might have had more GOTY nominations and even wins.
