Rules: If you list more than 4 things I'm gonna just tally the first 4 you say. If you list the same character multiple times it won't count. Be nice. Don't shove your personal definition of "Mount Rushmore" down others' throats. Have fun. If you're going to majorly change a vote please quote your old vote to make it easier for me.

-----------------

Difficult boss-battle-specific-rules: The boss must be notorious for being very, very difficult and almost always taking multiple attempts to beat. The boss... must be from a video game. You can't vote for your boss at work.

Please be specific here , do not vote for just "Seymour from FFX," or "Blue from Pokemon RBY," vote for the specific encounter. I will throw out votes if they are vague or maybe just make a (wrong) assumption on what you mean. I'm not going to ask you to clarify so it's on you to be a good Rushmore voter.

THE BATTLE MUST BE WINNABLE THROUGH LEGIT MEANS. Any story-based scripted battles where the protagonists LOSE do not count.

Well my first thought is "Dance Water Dance!" so

Demyx (Kingdom Hearts 2, Hollow Bastion encounter)

then

Whitney (Pokemon GSC)
It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.
Malenia, Blade of Miquella (Elden Ring)

Will think of others later but that's a shoe-in
It's Reyn Time.

Malenia
Sans Undertale
Through the Fire and Flames (Guitar Hero III)

first thoughts, very subject to change
A hero cannot be defeated simply by making him die.
Sephiroth (KH1)
Mike Tyson (Punch-Out)
Malenia (Elden Ring)
Phantamanta / Manta Ray (Super Mario Sunshine)

yeah, I know Manta Ray isn't that hard but it felt like the hardest boss ever to me as a kid, so sue me.
The Artist Formerly Known as Hannyabal
I'll accept Through the Fire and Flame because I didn't specify it being character bosses

Be aware that if we stray into "hard level" territory I'll void those votes

Last one is a bit of a personal pick but still pretty infamous for series fans
I've decided to put my fears behind me. I'm not going back.

Sans (Undertale)
Lingering Will (Kingdom Hearts II)
Malenia, Blade of Miquella (Elden Ring)

:)
man, I don't know where to begin with this one

Mike Tyson (Punch-Out)
Sans (Undertale)
Whitney (Pokemon GSC)
Rugal Bernstein (King of Fighters '94)

Tyson and Sans I don't think need much explaining. Whtiney (well more specifically her Miltank, I would vote for just her Miltank if I could) is one of the only bosses I can think of that some (not me.) think of as so hard that many memes have been produced about it

I put Rugal up there because SNK Boss is actual video game slang and I'd wager if you had to pick only one, it has to be him or Geese.

shout to MM7 Wily though. that shit is unbelievable I can't believe I didn't remember that one.
Born to lose, live to win!
Yellow Devil (various MM1 games but I'll say MM1 despite the glitch)
Mike Tyson (final fight of Punch-Out!!)
Dr. Fetus (Super Meat Boy)
Sans (certain path of Undertale)

Oh shit I just remembered those Final Fantasy bosses that were basically impossible so

Absolute Virtue (Final Fantasy XI)
It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.
Sans (Undertale)
Geese Howard (Fatal Fury)
Mike Tyson (Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!)
Malenia, Blade of Miquella (Elden Ring)

The reason for Geese Howard is because he is the birth of "SNK Boss Syndrome." A terrible, terrible disease that has spread to many fighting game bosses such as Rugal Bernstein, Goenitz, and even characters that are not from SNK such as Shao Khan.
Someday, I too will become Florida Man.
Sans
Sephiroth (Kingdom Hearts)
Emerald Weapon (Final Fantasy VII)
Ozma (Final Fantasy IX)
Change is weird.
  • Shiva, Streets of Rage 2
  • Rugal, King of Fighters '94
  • Sans, Undertale
  • Whitney, Pokemon GSC

I actually don't think any of the others (besides maybe Ornstein and Smough) would be appropriate for a general gaming Rushmore. When most of the bosses in a series are difficult, they aren't going to stand out as much. Malenia however had like, articles written about her, and started the Let Me Solo Her fad, and happens to be from the highest-selling Soulsborne game. That's different.
It's Reyn Time.
Sans (Undertale)
Emerald Weapon (Final Fantasy VII)
Mike Tyson (Punch-Out)
Rugal (King of Fighters 94)

Sans is too famous to ignore. Wanted an FF superboss - tossup between Emerald and Ruby really but Emerald can catch people off guard so sure. Also wanted a tough fighting game super boss, and I see other supporting Rugal, though I'd be willing to switch him out for a different one. Mike Tyson is pretty famous too.
"so is my word...It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." - Isaiah 55:11
I always thought Ruby was considered the more difficult of the two

Yeah, I have no knowledge on Soulsborne.

But a famously hard optional boss (Sans), a fighting game boss (Rugal), and a hard boss from a typically easy series (Whitney) all feel good. Tyson is a classic choice.

Ornstein & Smough are THE iconic difficult Soulsborne boss if you ask me. The contrasting fighting styles, the relentless pressure, the mid-fight transformation popularizing the concept of multi-phase boss fights, being the halfway-point skill check roadblock for the game. A perfect combination of difficulty and thematic weight. I think you don't get a future fight as challenging as Malenia without them.
I've decided to put my fears behind me. I'm not going back.
If you're gonna scream, scream with me
Malenia (Elden Ring)
Sans (Undertale)
Absolute Virtue (Final Fantasy XI)
I'll get back to this last one later, but I am on side "it makes sense to combine hamburger with cheeseburger"

Did not play Elden Ring, but I trust that a lot of bosses from these games would make at least some sense for this sort of thing. And the memes only seal the deal for this one.

Thank you hombad for reminding me of the travesty that is Absolute Virtue. It may not be the biggest hard FF boss in terms of notoriety but it sure takes the what the fuck cake to me.

I stubbornly refuse to vote Whitney, but if I chose her I'd pick original G/S/C specifically, because Heracross is a pretty good counter in the gen 4 versions.
I'm of two minds about Whitney. On one hand, she's an iconically challenging boss from a series usually not that hard. On the other hand, I've literally never struggled with her.

What if we compromised and voted Ultra Necrozma, who is definitely harder.
:)
I feel like Emerald and Ruby are tough to rank because if you run into them accidentally early on it's game over. If you fight them later in the game they're not super tough. I feel like Demon Wall and Carry Armor are tougher because of when they are fought and having specific party requirements.

I think for something like this, general gaming consensus is more important than personal experience

With that said I think the Pokemon fanbase heavily overrates how much they actually struggled with Whitney because she mildly stands out in an extremely easy series

Absolute Virtue (FF11)
Inbachi (Dodonpachi Saidaioujou)

Dodonpachi Saidaioujou has been out for like 10+ years now, and no one yet has beaten the true true last boss Inbachi in an actual run of arcade mode without cheating afaik. It's only recently that people practicing with save states (instead of actually playing through the game without missing and the other conditions to fight Inbachi in the first place ) have proven it's actually even possible for a human player to even beat it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1MBZA7w9YQ

open for suggestions for what to put to represent fighting game bosses, since I don't know which SNK boss is the SNK-iest or if something like Children of the Atom Magneto or Holy Order Sol would compete with one of those. As well as for a fourth.
The only certain death in the universe is Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons.
Not changing this line until I beat Seven Heroes (2/24/07) - Fulfilled 2/20/18
Also, cheeseburger/hamburger works fine for me.

I don't think Through The Fire And Flames should count today, personally, but it'd be a good nomination for a similar topic about levels.
