I believe it was Ange's idea because he thought the site was old and outdated, and thought it would be better just to move things over there

Discord is fine, but it's just a very different thing. I have an account but rarely ever even look at it for b8.

But the whole thing with gamefaqs is that posts can get bumped back to the top of the list, that doesn't happen on Discord or Reddit.

I already joined the Discord shortly after steiner made it, but the amount of people who wouldn't join it really surprises me. Instead of continuing the relationships that they cultivated over a decade or two, they would just bounce because the format is no longer a strict message board? I just can't wrap my head around the idea that people here not really mattering and love the "message board experience" that much.

What's weird to me is people acting like discord is the only alternative. If board 8 does go down, there will be another message board to replace it.

My plan for the weekend is to try to throw together a retro forum frontend and see how far that gets. Should be able to recreate the classic GFaqs look with added mobile support (my day job is apps these days so I feel like I can't skip that part!)

Won't be using it aside from testing unless this place goes down, and another backup may still be a better choice.

Maybe. I wouldn't want a new board to compete with board 8 as long as it exists so that's what makes it tricky. Worst-case scenario if we're not prepared, the board shuts down suddenly, discord becomes the jumping-off point to inform people of a new board, and there ends up being multiple competing boards. Even in that case, whatever the best board is that comes of that should at least be decent.

Sounds good! Thinking VueJS + Tailwind for the frontend and mysql.
Although DBs are where I am most unfamiliar so if you have a different one you're used to working with could go with that.

Nothing wrong with mysql, but what backend host you trying to use? Most use postgresql nowadays like Vercel
