There were a lot of 10s, but also a lot of comments regarding the oddities of the case. von Karma also had differing reactions across the board. All that said, the case still provided a ton of the top AA moments.

Summary:

While in something of a slump Phoenix is hired by Ema Skye to defend her sister, Chief Prosecutor Lana Skye, in the murder of a police detective. But this time, he may have bitten off more than he can chew.

Main Characters: Phoenix Wright, Ema Skye, Dick Gumshoe, Miles Edgeworth, The Judge
Other Characters: Lana Skye, Bruce Goodman, Angel Starr, Jake Marshall, Damon Gant, Mike Meekins, Joe Darke, Neil Marshall

My rating: 7.5/10. A pretty interesting case to look back on. Back when it's just the original trilogy, this case was held up being just as good as the other finale cases. I don't think that's the case anymore. The 3-day system is really pushed to its limits here, with each day feeling like a standard AA day, which makes the pacing feel off. That said, it's still a fun case. Gant is still probably my favorite one-case culprit. I like Day 2 and the Blue Badger more than most.

People often complain about the pacing on this one. It is long for me but I really think it ends up being worth the length. Gant feels really powerful and satisfying to beat.
No problem!
This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
9.5/10.

In retrospect the best case in the original game, amazing story, characters and tone. The pacing is fine because it is designed to stand on its own.

Only significant case Ive ever replayed.

The pacing is not fine, but I don't care, because the 3rd day of investigation and trial are absurdly packed with so many classic moments, mainly because of one of the best villains in the entire series.

For whatever reason, it doesn't really have that 'quintessential AA feeling' that the other cases from the first game have - it occupies a really strange place, being from the first Ace Attorney game we all played but clearly not of its game - but also not really of any game. Just a standalone case that really has a completely unique feeling to it. It's great, regardless - one of the most thorough and expansive murder mysteries in the entire franchise, with a well-written cast and some great moments. Some pacing issues do cause it to get kind of memory holed for me and there are some minor Edgeworth characterization issues but I can mostly overlook them.

Doesn't hold up in subsequent playthroughs, but probably on my first go around I preferred it to 1-4. The length just was too long.

I also really love the atmosphere in this case. It feels cold and hostile in a way the other first game cases dont. Really gives the whole thing more weight.

9.5/10 I really want to give this the full 10 across the board, but I do understand and acknowledge that it runs just a little too long.

Fantastic set of characters introduced in this case. Glad Ema becomes more relevant again - even though she's definitely changed - and Gant is also a really solid character in his own right.

Also because I missed it yesterday...

8.5/10 - some good characters and an intricate story, but the pacing runs from great to outright bad (though it's far from the worst case with that), and sometimes you get a little confused as to where you need to go next. Still very enjoyable, with some memorable personalities and storylines despite that.

Previous topics (IIRC I only voted in the first one and am not seeing any posts in the other topics in my history):
1-2: 6.5/10 - great concept, but the bad guy is just too easy to take down with after all the buildup, and it thus ends with a whimper
1-3: 6/10 - goes on way too long and doesn't get exciting until the third investigation day
1-4: 9.5/10 - fantastic the whole way through, it's long but doesn't drag; it's the best case in the first game

This case is an utter slog until Marshall takes the stand at the end of Trial Day 2, but it's amazing from that point on, so I can mostly forgive it.

Also I'll go ahead and say it: This case has the highest misfire rate on jokes of any case in the series. I don't know what was going on with the writing here or the case unique characters just gave them no material to work with in translation, but it's super noticeable to me here.

Although there are problems with Phoenix and the Judge, too, like they made them extra stupid for no reason.

As someone who played this after T&T (the Wii version had it as actual paid DLC), I find it baffling how badly this fits in with the Edgeworth plot line in JFA. "He left without a word, leaving only a note behind. Or not I guess lol." Phoenix's anger about it goes from justified albeit way over the top without this case to bafflingly petty with it.

Aside from that, this is nearly as bad as pacing issues get for me. Like even future cases that are actually much longer, the only one that felt worse to me is E1-5. And the new mechanics do not translate away from the DS, if they were ever good there. The surveillance footage in particular was atrocious, and that one wasn't really even a DS thing AFAIK.

But yeah the core case is solid.

Sadly, there are no second chances in the Guru, azuarc doesn't need one.

This one gets a lot of flack for being messy canonically but it has really cool original characters, music, etc. I love it.

It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.

this is so true. in my house i will not accept meekins slander.
Meekins has exactly one joke that lands. When they ask him what his occupation, he replies, "That would be murderer, sir!"

Other than that, all his attempts at humor are pretty cringe.

My first time through PW1, I would only save when the game prompted me to because I didn't want to resort to save scumming.

I made it all the way to the end of 1-5 and fell for the auto-lose game over when Gant tries to trap you into presenting the cloth with Ema's handprint on it. I lost so much progress, and at that point, I realized I had nothing to prove, so now I am a proud save scummer.

I think savescumming actually screwed me in that one, because I saved past a point of no return and there was nothing I could do to avoid the game over.

If 1-5 had a "turnabout" title in the name like all other cases, what would it be? I'd go with Double Turnabout.

I think the literal Japanese title is Turnabout Revival, so I don't know why the English version didn't keep the title (I guess because it wasn't a series revival in the west).

If we wanted a title that fits the case itself, there's The Dark Turnabout (because of Joe Darke) or maybe Another Turnabout Sisters

Sure, it's long, but once it gets going, it's cooking. Much better than 1-4. Sets the stage for some of the longer cases we have later.
