Ben Hur - Held the record for so long
The Godfather - often classified as the best movie of all time
Titanic - the new record holder*

went with this over LotR because it happened first and also LotR won a lot of awards kind of as the final piece of an entire entity

It Happened One Night, Parsite, All About Eve were also considered

Titanic only tied Ben-Hurs record. Its a three way tie between Ben-Hur, Titanic and RotK with RotK having the additional record of going 11/11, while Ben-Hur and Titanic both lost awards they were competing for.

youre right, it simply tied it

went for it in modern for the other reason

I think that RotK went 11/11 because it was the final film in the trilogy and they were giving it awards as whole accomplishment, as opposed to that film specifically.

titanic also did it first in the modern era

i do think that RotK is a toally fine vote

All three are good choices, though I would definitely want to see RotK on there because of its clean sweep. It did have the honouring the trilogy narrative but on the other hand you cant say it didnt deserve all those wins also, even song! Of the three I think the weakest claim is Titanic because Ben-Hur did it first and RotK did the sweep, while Titanic had three losses including a big one in Actress. It is the highest grossing best picture winner though. Ben-Hur and Titanic are my #5 and #6 respectively.

There should be a new rule that all best picture winners are required to have a theme park ride
