Right? There are people that just are so larger than life in your head that even though you know it doesn't work that way, to hear they died, even before the grief came there was shock , that somehow the impossible has occured, it can't be real. They were just there, bigger than life.
The suddenness is part of it. When Terry Pratchett passed it was sad, very sad, but it wasn't a surprise. He has not been well for some time. We got a chance to feel sad in stages.
