I thought DK64 was widely hated but I've recently learned it has fans. Never touched it myself but I do like collectathons...

I personally love it while simultaneously acknowledging and respecting why so many people hate it.

I think it's notable for being the most over the limit collectathon game there ever was, to the point that it helped that entire sort of genre to never make a collectathon game with that much BS to collect ever again.

I never beat it because I wanted to collect everything and it just took so long. And I think a lot of people were in that same boat.
I stream sometimes. Check it out!

Still way too over the top even with that, imo
I heard the randomizer is pretty good.

Definitely a case of too much of a good thing making it bad. 100 colored Bananas for each Kong, cool. Character-locking coins, gold bananas, and blueprints, ehnnn.

azuarc wasn't even home. he was playing Magic the Gathering at his buddy's store, which is extremely easy to verify
Loved it as a kid but don't think I'd ever dream of trying to complete it.

Did not like it, I haven't played it since I was a kid though

I can't really tell you why anymore, I just remember it being unpleasant

Loved the collectathon and exploration
Hated the amount of golden bananas locked behind bad minigames
Loved it as a kid, did literally everything there is to do.

Trying to go back to it nowadays is rough, though.

I haven't tried it with this mod yet but even before it existed I was swearing up and down that the awful backtracking was the main thing holding the game back. Have to imagine going back to vanilla is damn near impossible once you've tried it!

Playing it blind, I'm trying to get into it, but I don't know where to go after I rescued Diddy.

I don't care what anyone says, I really like the DK Rap, it's so funny.

Mechanically, the gameplay's okay enough. Musically, the DK Rap is perfect -- no notes.

As a whole package, however, that level of collect-a-thon'iness was offensive and I don't respect it. It and Banjo-Tooie were a brutal one-two punch for the direction of the genre, and I am glad they did not influence the industry further in the way of collecting things.

I liked it. It's probably a lot of nostalgia, but I do think there are a fair number of things to like about the game. Most of the common complaints are valid.
I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways.
do people legit hate the DK rap? theres alot of defending it here as if there are, I mean, how do you hate something light hearted, goofy, and non-offensive like that?

Played it again recently - 100% it.

I enjoyed the game as a child and still somewhat enjoyed it as an adult. I think the levels get progressively worse as the game goes on. While I acknowledge Banjo Kazooie as a better game, Banjo has a severe design flaw in requiring you to get all notes in one life.

I still enjoy the game and think that a modern game could be good in that style, but it's nowhere near the level of great collectathon games like Spyro the Dragon.

As someone who thought Banjo Kazooie had too much in the way of collection elements... yeah... atrocious is generous.
No problem!
This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Tooie wasn't particularly bad to me, but I've never played DK64.

Kazooie has aged poorly in comparison though. Tooie feels much more crisp. I have a soft spot for Kazooie being my first, but it's a lot harder to go back to.

Kazooie was remains the only collectathon where I have a 100% save file in a single sitting with 0 deaths. I mastered that **** <3.

its a huge pet peeve of mine where I can't 100% a world before moving on, I hate leaving it unfinished

I don't remember Kazooie doing that too often

It's been 20+ years since I went through the game (and since then I have maybe gone back a few times to get all of the golden bananas), but from what I remember Pun, it's really that there's a lot that you can only do/collect with a specific Kong, so you are required to swap out characters (and you can only do so at certain spots in a level) a lot for progression/collection purposes within a level.

I never played BK or BT, so going from SM64 to this was a jolt. I enjoyed it, but it wore on me pretty quickly to the extent that I never finished it. These days, not finishing a game wouldn't be that remarkable, but back then, I played every game I owned at least 8 or 9 times because I didn't get one very often, so if I didn't finish a game -- particularly one that would be so involving -- that's saying a fair bit.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.

Hmm, not really. Well at first because you unlock some kongs in the second and third world, so you'd have to take them back to fully complete the first two. But otherwise it's all as you go.

Kind of.

You unlock the kongs over the first 3 worlds. After getting them all, there's very very little actual times where you have to use a kong to unlock another kong's area.

So you could play the game like...

Jungle Japes
Angry Aztec
Frantic Factory
Jungle Japes
Angry Aztec

Then for the most part, one visit to each other world. I think if you do that though, there is at least once or twice that you'll have to backtrack once you pick up an upgrade.

That said, the levels aren't the hardest to navigate, so it's not the *worst*. I've only played Conker for a night so far, but DK64 controls so much better that I'd rather be backtracking in it.

I don't think Tooie leaves a good first impression, but it grew on me the more I played and by the end the collectible stuff didn't bother me (I did play the Rare Replay version so it may have made things easier like not having to get all the notes in one life etc). If DK is in the same ballpark then that doesn't sound so bad!

Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see
Tooie is worse than Kazooie in that regard but I don't think it's significantly worse. Most of the extra length just comes from the worlds being so much more developed.

Backtracking into stages is more frequent yes, but it's also a relatively small amount of the playtime.

If anything it suffers from the worlds feeling too big until you get used to the scale. It's basically BK on steroids in that regard.
So a planet's somewhere out there, their history the same as ours is written. The only difference is that... Everyone's a kitten!
Banjo Tooie never forced you to collect all the notes in one life/visit even in the original release.

I liked Kazooie more than Tooie although I like both quite a bit. Probably 2 of my favorite platformers overall.

I wouldn't really say this because I think the issues are of a different nature. In Banjo Tooie the levels are interconnected and/or reliant on powerups from later levels so you're constantly having to go back and forth from one level to the other throughout the game. With DK64 it's more just that there's so much to collect and all the collectables can only be found by specific characters and it's just a lot to manage. Also a lot of the bananas in DK64 require you to complete some incredibly frustrating minigames. (Edit: Imagine like the Canary Mary race but there's 10 others like it)

OK I'm out
To be clear Canary Mary would be one of the most frustrating if it were in DK64 also so I'm exaggerating a bit. There's definitely several in DK64 I'd include in the same conversation though.

Pyre has convinced anyone who hasn't played DK64 to never play it with a just a single sentence.

Beaver Bother is the only one I felt was on that level.

I will say, the frustration factor of Donkey Kong 64 goes down quite a bit when you learn how to actually play Beaver Bother (you don't go for them head on, but instead you come at them from the side).
