His first video is about the concept of hitstop. I think it's really well done!

Huh, I didn't know the first Kirby's Dream Land was the best selling game in the entire franchise. It's by quite a long shot too.

...except that Forgotten Land is catching up near it pretty handily. Wow.
Okay, I rolled a 14. What's that mean? Hsu

Forgotten Land was announced as the new best selling Kirby in Nintendo's last financial report recently

I wonder why Star Allies didn't get similar sales. It feels like every franchise on Switch does really well, but the gulf between that and FL is pretty huge.

Because it was $60 permanently while also being Star Allies

FL feels like it got a much bigger push on top of the Switch effect.

Congrats to azuarc for winning the GotD 2020 Guru Contest!
Aha, that makes sense. It'll be number 1 by the time the year is done though, I'm sure.

As for why FL beat KSA: it's a much bigger and better game. FL is considered one of the best Kirby games, while KSA is more in the middle to lower end of the pack. I think KSA would've sold as well as FL is now if it had been acclaimed - 2D vs. 3D doesn't have that much to do with it.

What problems did people have with Star Allies? I'm not expert of the Kirby Hierarchy but I was under the impression people liked that game quite a bit.

The majority of its popular content came in free post-release updates (just like Animal Crossing, Splatoon, etc.) but people who stopped playing it before the updates love talking about how little content there is in the game.

I think it's fair to say that a game is lacking in content if it's in that state on release. Not everyone wants to wait for something to get good.
It's Reyn Time.
It's kind of an arcade game and the extra content was just more characters to play through the streamlined version of it with. That and the forced co-op with AIs if you didn't have players was not great.

Huh, if I had to guess off the top of my head, I would have thought Kirby's Epic Yarn would have been the best-selling Kirby game. Sure seemed like it made a decent splash at the time.
Come watch me on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/gameryogi
azuarc beat me.
Kirby Star Allies didn't get the same promotional push Forgotten Land got (which, for a Kirby game, was pretty substantial). Star Allies is fine, but it's nothing special. There's no reason to play it again after you've already beaten it, even with the post-release content. Forgotten Land, on the other hand, is quite good.

I played it a few months ago and still didn't think it was that great. It's mostly just Kirby mega fans who liked the bonus content I think
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
The playable cast is some unprecedented level of Kirby fanservice, from main and secondary villains from across the series to Gooey and the Dreamland 2 animals. But the game itself didn't grab me.

New video on frame rate is the least interesting or in-depth so far but still presented well.

I think that's a kind of video that hardcore gamers will get nothing out of while casual gamers might learn a lot about such an important video game topic.

I remember having a talk with some friends a few months ago about frame rates and it seemed hard for them to get the concept behind it. I got asked the question "how many frames is real life?" for example...

I don't think this is true at all. FL got a much bigger marketing push because it was the first real attempt into 3D, and it being 3D caused a lot of people who were only moderate Kirby fans, or maybe burnt out on the original style, to buy it to give it a try since it was something new and different. I'd wager there were a lot of people that tried it simply because it was 3D.

EDIT: Now, it almost certainly has better legs due to being a better game, but 3D definitely had an impact on the initial sales rush.

Yeah, you're probably right that being the first 3D Kirby was a big deal. 2D Mario generally sells better than 3D Mario, but having a big first splash is a big deal.

Very interesting to see the thought process behind many of the decisions in Kirby's Adventure. Would he have ever had his copy ability if the next Kirby game had been on the SNES?

Also, this seems like the birth of Sakurai's "one button gameplay" style...

A bunch of RPGs shown here.

Interesting enough, it's only Nintendo games that Sakurai explicitly mentioned getting permission for on his channel page. So it's like, is he free to use any game outside of those?

F/GO: 271551102; FFRK: 9k6d; FFBE: 886783216; LLSIFAS: 438166726
It doesn't sound like he has explicit permission for game that aren't from Nintendo and is relying on fair use. He goes over it here:

Time stamp: 4:01

Although he probably had permission for the Japan Game Awards footage since he is involved with that.

I'm pretty sure Sakurai was in love with Persona 5 from interviews I remember around the time of Joker's reveal in smash so that's not surprising. I think it left a big impact on him
Congrats Black Turtle !

8-4 continuing to do good work. But it's funny to see Toby Fox as the reference for 8-4 instead of you know....the sheer fact that they're a well-known localization company.

I guess maybe Toby had that information on hand while they were talking.
