Reminder: Youtube is privatizing all unlisted videos from pre-2017 on July 23

Long story short, they changed some backend stuff in 2017 and now any unlisted videos posted before that time are being converted to private (i.e. no one can watch them). As a channel owner you have the ability to opt out of this change to keep your unlisted videos watchable. I strongly suggest that you opt out of this if you have any unlisted videos that you still share around (as in, you keep them unlisted to hide the links but you still post the links publicly on other sites). Also if you happen to have any links to unlisted videos from accounts who haven't logged on in years, you might want to download them because they'll be gone in 2 days and we might be losing pieces of internet history.

Not sure why it's baffling, this is exactly what happens when a company has zero competition in their space. There's no incentive to not suck

This is a nice sentiment, but things get lost all the time. Just ask viewers of porn how much was lost this year when a certain place decided to go on a deletion rampage. Sure, some of it will have backups, but not all.

I can only imagine the same thing will be true of this youtube decision. People can generally do a good job archiving a lot of things, but with more and more things existing, something will eventually have to give.
