I more or less agree. Route A was definitely the main highlight of the game. The rest is still great but brings it down to a 9/10.

I feel like you need to play the original Nier to get full enjoyment out of Automata, but it's still good on its own.

I absolutely <3 Pillars of Eternity. Hope you enjoy it as well!

It was between that and Torment: Tides of Numenera. PS:T is one of my favorite games of all time but considering I'll probably only play one of these types of games this year I had to go with the better reviewed and received game.

Haha, that's kind of how I arrived at Pillars of Eternity myself!

Yeah, a lot of stuff like Emil, the flower field, and Devola/Popola resonate a lot more if you've played Nier and are familiar with them. It's still great, but there a bunch of little things/moments like that that can just wow you if you have the original under your belt.

I think I missed the original because it came out in my really dark ages of gaming when I was in college and only played Madden/FIFA/FPS/mobas. Easy to pick up and put down games I could play with groups, you know?

I see that an updated version is being released in a few weeks. Might check it out at some point
I don't think you need to play Nier 1 for this, but the biggest advantage it gives you is setting you up for the philosophical parts of the story. Like the plot itself is fine, but it's really just there to deliver the philosophy, so it doesn't really matter. Route C really sells that by making the android story more abstract and detached. It ends up being that the pods are the most human things in the story, followed by the robots, and the androids are the least human (and thus so is the player... until they give up their save game)

Yeah I only got super invested with Route C. Like 9S started to become a real character and shit. The direction definitely surprised me.

I mean obviously A is still good. B was just a bit too repetitive for my liking though.

Didn't it become entirely personal for 9S? Before the missions were mostly routine and now he's all like AHHHHH REVEEENNNNNGEEE
Yeah I gotta say the plot becoming 'detached and abstract' in route C is certainly 'a take'.

If anything I'd say A and B were far more detached because there were few actual stakes until near the very end.
Did you beat the mini game solo?

More personal for him but not the player. Not for me at least.

Clearly the player should insert themselves into the Pods.

Route C(and D and E) is the most emotional I've ever gotten at a game too, so I'd argue its doing something right.

Can you expand on this
I mean it's pretty good. I thought it was tense/gripping the entire way through (from the invasion all the way through Route E). Liked going through the boxes with 9S. I can see the argument that A2's route isn't as good, especially if you never connected with A2 as a character. Even then, the stuff with pascal is pretty emotionally affecting. Ending E got me weeping. The Emil fight. Maybe not the MOST emotional I've ever felt at a video game but it did get me feeling things.
