What's your favorite game you've never played?

Something you've only watched, but feel like you would've loved it had you played it yourself. Or maybe you only enjoyed it because you weren't the one playing it?

I have answers that fits both categories. The former would be Hypnospace Outlaw. It hits that 90's internet nostalgia weak point perfectly, and the process of getting through the game would've been something I would've absolutely loved. However, I watched someone else play it because I wasn't sure it'd be fun for me, and 98% of the fun is seeing all the pages, so there's no reason for me to play it myself anymore.

My answer for the latter is Deadly Premonition. Its sense of humor and storyline are just sublime and fit me perfectly. I love the setting, the characters, pretty much everything about it. But everyone I've watched and heard discuss this game attest to the fact that it is NOT fun to play at all. It has clunky controls, enemies are massive bullet sponges, and it's generally very awkward. But watching it lets you see all the fun parts without having to deal with any of that stuff.

So if I had to pick only one of these as my final answer, I'd go with Deadly Premonition. What's yours?

God, Illbleed is another great answer for that second part. I would have absolutely no fun playing that game. It's all about getting around invisible damage points and it would be just so god damn tedious.

Laser Lords was the first one to come to mind.

You know, let's just say half of the games Supergreatfriend has played.

Because azuarc won the Guru.
nothing fitting the former definition comes immediately to mind, but the original Drakengard for the latter
thelefty for analysis crew 2008 imo -transience

This doesn't fit exactly, but I would've much preferred to just watch a playthrough of EarthBound. The game was so unnecessarily frustrating and it kind of ruined the game for me
Congrats azurac! You crushed it in the GotD2 Guru challenge!

Getting Over It

Similar to Jump King, it's the perfect schadenfreude game. Watching a streamer make significant progress and then throw it away over and over again is very entertaining. I also like the Myth of Sisyphus representation going on.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure

Granted if it were easily available in English I would buy it immediately but still.
As a guru, only azuarc truly knew what it meant to Reach for the Moon.
I like this topic.

Let's see...
  • FFVII R is the latest one since it's got some great memes and it seems that Aerith's characterization is amazing. Though I do have the game, I just haven't played it yet.
  • ACNH is another recent one. Some people post Marshall and Raymond stuff and they're just so cute. The memes are also good. And there's a wolf named Audie which might or might not be named after a grandma of the same name who played AC extensively.
  • The Movies. I really like the concept and it seems interesting enough but I'm not in the mood to play it myself or try to get it running on my relatively recent PC.

Out of those, I'd go with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It's really pretty and fun to look at but I know I'd hate the gameplay.

Into the woods, but mind the future!
As far as watching my friends play: SaGa Frontier. Seriously had fun watching him use all sorts of cool moves in battle.

As far as watching YouTube aka Let's Play: Ace Attorney Investigations 2.

I do plan on watching Ghost Trick Let's Play sometime, because I hate the actual gameplay, but the rest of it is very intriguing. Maybe Earthbound, too, because the gameplay itself is a hassle (as Betrayed noted) but I like the quirkiness of the game.
Congrats to azuarc for winning the Guru challenge!
Dragonball Fighterz

Technically I played it for like a week but I've watched a lot more online gameplay from tournaments.

I haven't watched too many LPs, but I guess I'd go with Dai Gyakuten Saiban 1 and 2!
I would say Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I like fighting games, both watching and playing, but I've never been great at this series (I did buy MVC2) and never really wanted to play myself. I've watched matches at EVO and other tournaments and it's still fun to watch.
Congrats to azuarc for winning the guru contest.

Silent Hill 2

This is a good one. I liked watching the Super Best Friends play it for the story, but the gameplay looks like something I would never be into in a million years. I'm sure something else fits the bill way better though.

this is a good answer

love watching umvc3 - absolutely hated playing it. touch of death combos, scrubby online, way too easy single player.
Hmmmmmm don't really know how to answer this!

Like if I'm guessing which game I haven't played I'd like the most I'd probably say Dragon Quest X, though I've avoided really looking up any details on it just in case it ever gets an English release. I'm having a hard time thinking of games that I know I'd love and do know a lot about, but still haven't played for some reason.
Congrats to azuarc , GotD2 Guru champ!

ACNH

this is a good one, I like all the fanart and pictures of people's islands though I've never actually played an AC game and don't have a Switch

As for the second category, a lot of platformers. I'm not that into playing them but I love watching speedruns and perfect runs of stuff like The End is Nigh, Hollow Knight, etc.

That Metroid 2 fan remake. I can't morally justify playing it, but I remember people saying it was fun.

Ace Attorney Investigations 2. Watched a playthrough of it on YouTube because I didn't want to mess around looking for an emulator to play it
Suddenly, Mudkips. Thousands of them. (preferably OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Congrats to azuarc , 2020 Guru champ.
There's tons of games I enjoyed watching my brothers playing in my youth, such as Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix, Burnout 3, and the entire Sly Cooper series, among many others. That being said, I think the only one that firmly fits either definition (the former in this case) is Dragon Quest VIII. I never watched very much of it, actually, but I know I would love it simply because it's Dragon Quest.

azuarc won the 2020 Guru Contest because he avoided picking rashly.
I was thinking of some other answers but then I remembered Katamari Forever. I'm big into both of the PS2 Katamari games but never owned a PS3. Forever's soundtrack was my #1 game soundtrack for around 6 years (it's still in my top 3).

Pretty much every Metal Gear Solid game falls into the former category for me. I've watched Chip and Ironicus go through each game and there is no way I'd come close to the depth of knowledge or skill that Chip demonstrates about the game were I to play them myself.

They're also currently doing a Mario Odyssey lp that also goes into the former category for me. There's so much that nintendo stuffed into that game, and a lot of the nostalgic nods are astounding, but I lack a switch and have no immediate plans to get one anytime soon. It is the Mario game I wish I could have played as a kid. Best I can currently hope for is that hack of SM64 XD

As far as the latter category goes, the only thing coming to mind are things like iwbtg or kaizo mario type levels. It is fun watching others suffer, but that's not the kind of gameplay experience I relish for myself.
There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out
