Since I looked and the only real one is from before the game dropped and I'm not dragging that up.

I managed to stay pure all the way through, and I am not sure where things go from here. But that sure was a thing that happened.

Are we gonna let KH characters into smfffc now, I don't think there's much of a distinction between these series anymore.
So it's possible that all of S7 Avalanche is alive now. Also Zack. And Aeris is probably not dying anymore. What do they even do to make the next part not feel like cringy fanfiction?

Also what is up with Aeris and her random pacification powers on Marlene and Red?

And is this Sephiroth from the original game or is he just aware of the that timeline for some reason all of a sudden?

...so many questions.

I haven't played it myself but some people were suggesting maybe things don't have to turn out too differently, but then others say it implies the plot is going to go in a completely new direction.

I suppose the real answer is that it's ambiguous.
It is ambiguous, yes, but the splash screen for the ending pretty much screams "WE CHANGING THINGS, BITCHES!"

I think this is the main thing right now. We don't know. Yeah, it could definitely spiral in some crazy direction. But it could also cause a new/different way of moving towards a lot of the same things that happen regardless. I'm guessing episode 2 (or whatever they call it) will go to the end of what would be disc 1. I still have faith that the final boss will be Jenova LIFE (with some Sephiroth addition I'm sure), and the iconic death will still be a thing.

I guess the big question is why?

Why have so little faith in the game?
Or is it that they still don't believe they can make a good faithful remake yet, and are using this chance to experiment. Anything poorly received doesn't hurt the brand and they can do it "right" later.

Ending spoilers:

It's funny that people are debating how many parts there will be or what will be in the next part when this game is literally about to go off the rails with Nomura level bullshit. I am expecting at least one Xehanort/Sephiroth team-up in Castle Oblivion in the second part.

They very simply bit off more than they can chew. PS1 era games were expansive because assets were pre rendered backgrounds, very easy to crank out. Building something as detailed and expansive as Midgar is in a modern engine is so resource intensive that it would have taken them 10 years and tens of millions of dollars to fit all in one package. That big of an investment basically forced them to chunk it up and release it in parts.

As to why they fucked with the story, I guess they figured they needed a hook to get people to buy parts 2, 3, etc. because a more faithful remake would lose a lot of steam with that much time between releases.

I pray this is the motivation because things can proceed fairly unchanged with just a few 'Kingdom Hearts' moments.
What if Part 2 ends with Cloud teaming with Andrea to breakdance fight Sephiroth to save the world?

I think that's acceptable.

I am so conflicted with this game. I mentioned this somewhere before this topic came up but I both love it and I'm kind of disappointed at the same time. I feel that post-game emptiness that a lot of people get when finishing a long, good game/book, but I'm not sure if it's because it sucks that it's over or that I didn't like how it ended.

For the first 98% of the game I was incredibly excited for my hard mode replay immediately after finishing, but after that ending I kind of think I'm done? I can't even really explain why though because I would still say that I loved my time with the game. I almost feel like the ending makes the game retroactively less good for me, which I hate to say. I'm thinking back now at how much more dumb those ghosts were in certain points with the knowledge of what they represent.

Part of it for me was expectations. I don't think I was expecting something on par to the original, but the game was strictly marketed as X and I feel like I was delivered Y, and therefore let down when I didn't get X. Y is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but if they led with, "Hey this is Y", I would have said, "Well, I'm not sure I want that", then after I played it would have realized, "Huh, this might actually turn out really cool". Don't tell me I'm getting X and not give me X, though.

I'm rambling but I have a million thoughts.
The final Undisputed Champion in UCA history.
I liked the concept of the fates, especially how you basically fought the OG team at the end, but it makes it incredibly easy to whiff the follow-up. I'd say there's a greater chance of them fucking up than nailing it even.

What even is this game.

I will say despite my negative thoughts after finishing, I am all the way in for whatever nonsense comes next and that's going to be because I am no longer expecting a faithful remake like I was with this one.
The final Undisputed Champion in UCA history.
having played the original and not retaining any sort of reverence for the story like a million other people do, i fucking love the audacity of squeenix to do something as bold as they did with the ending of this remake. og ff7 is one of the medium's most beloved titles, especially for its plot and characters, so i wasn't expecting anything but squeenix to play it safe and keep fans happy considering the years-long anticipation and how much resources they're pouring into it. kojima is the only other big AAA name i could think of that would be willing to do something as bold with the amount of money and the storied reputation riding on this project.

it's fascinating how so much of this remake is in conversation with the original and the legacy it left behind. there's just no denying the history of ff7, both in-universe and on a meta level, and i'm very glad nomura and co. decided to confront it directly. just making it as faithful as possible to the 97 version would have been... fine. definitely would have made it less controversial and financially risky! personally, i don't think i would love it as much as i do now if they had gone down that route. i wasn't even planning on playing it anytime soon, but the word-of-mouth regarding the entire ending sequence got me hyped enough to preorder the digital version a couple of days before release to preload it. zero regrets! i'm also just way more excited to see where they take the story! i went from not really caring about this to being bummed at the idea of having to wait so much longer to get the sequels, because let's face it, they aren't coming out anytime soon!

i say all this being fully aware that the new direction has WAY more potential of turning into hot garbage narratively simply because of the nature of time travel/alternate dimension fiction and what people say about nomura's handling of kingdom hearts' story (i dunno i only played the first). but i'm always for the excitement of the promise of something new, and i applaud risk-taking in media. time will tell if it pays off, but right now i'm living in the moment where potential can go so many ways.

and if it does turn out to be a trainwreck, the original will always be there!

also, as long as the combat remains amazing and gets refined for the better, i'd go along for any wild narrative ride.

The balls to kill off the 97 party or at least their essences is off the charts though.

Yeah I'll give it to them, I really want to see where they go from here. I'm terrified it will be a giant flop, but I'm interested.

Otherwise all we'd be talking about is if Part 2 ends with THE SPOILER or somewhere after.

Now we're like... Does THE SPOILER even happen?
If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?
#theresafreakingghostafterus
I think said spoiler still needs to happen, but that may be the purist in me. Part 2 will definitely be heavily looked at regarding all of this, and may dramatically affect sales for part 3. I think droves of people will still spend on part 2 to see which direction they go, but would be dicey to try the same tactic for part 3. Either way, still looking forward to this playing out in front of me, as I'm not quite there yet in this part.

Did the Corneo Coliseum, which was awesome. When the bonus battle was announced, I was expecting Reno, Rude, or both. I was NOT expecting the glorious HELL HOUSE!!! I was a little disappointed that I didn't run into it while going through sector 6 and thought it was just forgotten. It, thankfully, was not.

I know its a spoilers topic but end game spoilers that may affect others in this topic who arent there yet.

The Whispers are an analogy of the purist fans, doing whatever they possibly can to keep the game on track to be the same as the OG but ultimately ends in futility.

I too didn't really catch it when I first played either. I was just so shocked/confused at what was going on that I literally took everything at face value through that entire chapter. I finished the game, thought, "huh, that was odd", and then watched the credits as if nothing really was different.

I even posted in another topic, while the credits were rolling, something to the effect of, "Yeah that was weird but at least the story is still intact", because it was entirely lost on me. It was only when I really started thinking about what I just played, along with going online, that I literally let out an audible, "what the fuck".
The final Undisputed Champion in UCA history.
In hindsight I probably would have thought it was way cooler if I realized all of this stuff while I was playing rather than after it was all over. That's Nomura for you, though. I've played every single KH game multiple times and still had to watch a recap before 3 to really make sure I knew what was going on.

Another thing I didn't get until I read it: That weird "Seven seconds until the end" flex from Sephiroth at the end.

Seven seconds is how long Sephiroth was floating in the air before he impaled Aeris in OG. That's why he tells Cloud that it might be enough time for him, but what will be do with it?

And the music playing in that scene is even a rearrange of the music from right before he impaled Aeris.

That... is actually a pretty sick burn from Sephiroth now that I get it. Also since Aeris dying is what saves the planet in OG, maybe he's even taunting Cloud into stopping it altogether!

I feel for anyone who is actually optimistic about the changes.

Because it does seem like they don't understand how Square works. Somewhere made a comparison to Kojima, but he's actually a good storyteller. Current Square's only hope at telling a good story is just copying one of their old ones. New territory is going to be bad.
"Cautiously optimistic" is what I'm rolling with.

This isn't a remake with plot details changed to match the vision of the new format or make things work better. That's common in adaptations - you can't keep everything exactly the same.

This is a case where the events of the original FF7 all canonically happened, and this is take two where Sephiroth knows how things went and that he lost, so he's causing changes. The plot ghosts know how things were supposed to go and have been trying super hard to make sure they go that way.

After all, at the Midgar point in the plot, Sephiroth shouldn't really give any kinds of fucks about Cloud in particular. But this is post game Sephiroth, maybe even post AC Sephiroth, so he's actually does see Cloud as the personal adversary that Cloud has always seen Sephiroth as.

The end of the Midgar fully commits to changing a few events after keeping things mostly the same the whole way through, so now we are coming out the other side with some differences.

Going into the future releases, this is full on new timeline, baby. Anything could happen. This took me from not caring at all about this remake to being 100% on board. This is awesome.

Also I read an article (need to find it) that makes the apt comparison of the whisperers of fate being basically us playing the game/the hype of the remake itself. This meta aspect is kinda similar to the hype of what MGS2 went through as well.
