El Shaddai is a really unique and cool game with GOD AWFUL gameplay. Even my friend who adores the game will admit it's not really fun at all.

This is just an...awkward list.

Pokemon Go always making this lists sort of mystifies me in a way

It's certainly one of the biggest cultural experiences of the decade, and I do think it's a fun activity that encourages people to go outside, and it's one of the most interesting technological concepts for a game to date - but the game itself is boring and really just feels like a list of stuff to collect with a presentation that is close to as clinical as possible

I don't really know how to rate something like that. Maybe I just need to change my thinking on what makes a game 'good', but for me it just wasn't worth spending that much time with, and holding it up to a bunch of games with stronger craft and auteurism behind them just seems really strange to me

I don't feel the same way about stuff like Minecraft and Fortnite mind you, I'm too old for that shit but it clearly belongs on a game of the decade list

It seems like this is kind of just a single person's list? Which explains some of the weirder choices, but then doesn't explain why a lot of the list does seem very 'consensus', which kind of threw me

I'm surprised given the author's predilections that neither The Witness or Her Story made it on to this list, those were two like huge conceptual standouts in the indie scene in the last decade

oh the first thing i did when i glanced at the list and saw some of the entries was to ctrl+f "her story" because i was sure it'd be on there

and i too was very surprised not to find it

There are so many mobile games better than Holedown, which was a fun concept but didnt do enough with it. I ended up regretting that purchase

Pokemon GO had a more immediate (if short-lived) effect on wider culture than any other game on this list. People connected over that game on a scale never before seen. It's not a game you would play in a vacuum but that's mostly irrelevant because it was impossible to play that game in a vacuum when it came out.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.

yeah, that first like month of Pokmon GO was a really cool time. Youd be out and could see who else was playing the game and it felt like this social phenomenon that made the experience of playing the game much more significant than just the sum of its mechanics.

Theres a good chance ill never play it again, but my time with it around launch is probably my favorite gaming experience of the decade. I dont know exactly how to compare that to games that are just really good games, but id definitely include it on a list like this.

I was there for the early days of Pokemon Go so I totally know what you're talking about, but it's something I put more in the same category as like "Twitch Plays Pokemon" where it's like this crazy interactive experience that you kinda had to be there to understand how big a deal it was. and unlike Pokemon Go, TPP gave us like a bunch of memes and cultural touchstones, whereas Go has just not done that

Maybe I'm just missing something here, but I don't feel like TPP ever made the transition from internet phenomenon to genuine real-life cultural phenomenon, unlike Go. The audience for the former at least seemed much more limited than the latter, which truly hit all walks of society.

Oh I agree that it didn't, but I do think that TPP is something that sort of lives in at least our niche part of cultural memory (which is where most of our favorite games live anyway), whereas Pokemon Go hasn't really like... imparted me with any lasting ideas, which maybe it's not something that everyone values, but I do. Maybe it's just because I didn't like Pokemon Go as much but thinking back on playing it in its heyday isn't really something I do a lot. I remember a lot of good times I had in my life that were indirectly related to Pokemon Go, and that's the stuff I have a hard time ranking, because playing Pokemon Go sort of turned into "you know, I should really just go for walks on the nature trails in the city more often", which I ended up doing without the aid of PoGo
