Board 8 » Have you ever learned an instrument before?
Topic question.

Got a violin today, marking the... 6th instrument I will put effort into learning. Prior has been: Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Guitar (own an electric, also tried father's acoustic for one song attempt), Piano, and now this.

Shut up Scarlet.
Owned a guitar when I was young but never really learned much. Always wanted to learn piano.

Ah! I forgot to fully separate piano to keyboards, which leaves off stuff like organ... Did you know accordions count as keyboards? I didn't.

Piano
Viola

Were the ones I actually practiced. But I also played some of my older sister's instruments just to try them, so like...Harp, Cello. Pretty sure I've used a Violin at some point (I almost certainly have touched a Violin at some point; basically a Viola, right?) Also learned a Recorder (basically a woodwind for kids). Did some practicing and research on DJ turn tables, beat matching for mashups. I've touched a guitar, but I don't think that counts.

Piano and saxophone, mainly. Also played clarinet and flute for a year each before picking up the sax.

Viola and Violin have about the same difference as a piccolo and a flute. Just size and minor difference in octaves.

Shut up Scarlet.
i played saxophone from elementary through high school. my senior year i tried bassoon a bit, then after high school i tried piano and guitar a bit. not enough that i'd say i truly learned how to play anything but sax.
Grats to BKSheikah , a guru ahead of his time.

Played saxophone (all of the main 4 types) for 10 years. Also have technically played clarinet though only for one song which we never ended up perturbing. (There is a lot of carry-over between the two instruments)
Congratulations to BK_Sheikah00 , this year's guru to achieve contest enlightenment!
I played trumpet for a couple years in elementary school. Then we moved to an apartment and I stopped.
BK_Sheikah ? More like BYIG_Sheikah.

Clarinet for 8 years, but was never more than garbage
~Peaf~
Played piano, clarinet/bass clarinet and percussion and sang in the choir extensively in middle/high school, and have tried out alto sax, trumpet, and guitar.

Tried to learn guitar a bunch of times, failed.
I can play piano

I also got an instrument today, a melodica (which is basically a piano but you blow in it to produce sound kind of like a harmonica or something)

Hit Strings thinking about guitar, I meant to put multiple instruments because I play drums and some piano too
Got a brand new blues that I can't explain
With a somewhat loose definition, Trombone, recorder, ocarina. With an even looser definition, harmonica.

But I will learn the flute!

Wrong

You should've gotten a cello, better instrument to pick up.

just the recorders they forced us to learn in music class in elementary
Guitar, bass, sitar and piano so I voted strings...

Then I realized you anagramd the poll and listed piano not under strings
Notyou
"Learned" is being generous, but I did try to learn a few instruments.

"Try" is being generous, because I half assed it and didn't really practice.

Well, piano is a keyboard anyway.
Visual novels are video games too.
Shut up Scarlet.
I took guitar lessons for 4 years when I was a teenager. It was fun but I was never very good, probably because the kind of music I wanted to play doesn't really involve being very good.
SuperNiceDog didn't have to reconcile his name...
But Dauntless Hunter is now MrGreenonion
I had a piano in my house my entire life and never learned it.
Bought a drum set about 4 years ago. After I nearly broke my back playing on the wrong chair I have never gone back to it.

Used to be able to play both the viola and the bass guitar. Haven't played the viola in over 20 years, and haven't played the bass in about 5
Congrats to the BYIG Guru Winner, BKSheikah

More brass players than woodwind players? Oh, wait, almost everyone here is male, so that makes sense!. Sad how few pick strings... but the typical 6th/7th grader wants to play LOUD music! If beginning electric guitar was an option for a music ensemble without limitations on enrollment....

I played trumpet for a couple years in elementary school. Then we moved to an apartment and I stopped.

Tragic. I'm lucky my apartment neighbors tolerate my playing, though I don't play my trumpet too late of course.

I also learned piano, at least enough to play a moderately difficult piece with some practice. Again, you need neighbors that tolerate it... too bad I don't have a usable piano anymore, and there's no room for the electronic keyboard I had....
Time to throw a complicated party for the mighty prophet and seer BKSheikah !
Harmonica for awhile! I ought to pick it up again.

My elementary school only had band, no strings. I walked in having no idea what I wanted to play. The director assigned me to trombone because there was only one other guy who was doing trombone. But it worked out because 6th/7th grade me definitely liked playing LOUD music.
another place and time, without a great divide, and we could be flying deadly high
