Have you heard of the half your age plus seven rule?

I wouldn't expect _everyone_ to know it but it's pretty damn common.

I heard it from a math teacher once as an example of how math can be used in real life

Then, over the years, I subsequently heard it multiple times from people who'd also taken that teacher's math class so they probably all got it from him. But, yes, I've heard it in real conversation multiple times.

it's always been a funny rule of thumb

people would bring it up in high/middle school, because around that point the margins are razor thin

Yeah I heard it around middle school since it's tuned for age 14... not sure if anyone dared mention it past age 20

According to this I'm apparently only supposed to date people older than me. Doesn't seem very useful.

I only heard it recently. A relationship can still work even with a greater age difference, though. The girl I like is just outside of this and I don't care. I still see things actually working out.
