Do you ever lend money to people?

Well, do you?

So this girl I knew from uni keeps borrowing money every couple months or so, usually between 100 to 200 USD (which might not sound much but here in Indonesialand, that's 1/6-1/3 of my monthly income). It's a weird situation, since she seems to be living paycheck to paycheck (a freelancer IT girl), but she always pays me back...so it's...ok I guess?

I dunno, but I was particularly inconvenienced when I didn't have any savings. Thankfully I have some due to the holiday stipend now, so it doesn't hurt that much.

What about you, B8? Do you lend people money? Are you a loanshark in human disguise?

never
I "loaned" money to a friend back in Junior High. It wasn't much, like $10... but was a little irksome that he pretended to not know that I did loan the money and he never payed me back.

I don't currently, but I have in the past. at this point in my life if a friend or family member needs money and I can afford it I just give it to them and tell them they can pay me back if they want. too many past experiences where my sister or mom would borrow money and then not pay me back. rather than set myself up with expectations of receiving money it's better to only offer the money if I can afford to give it as a gift.

Nah, if I ever give money, I don't ask them to pay me back. Having a borrower/lender situation seems to cause more problems than it solves with relationships.

She's probably on drugs and she's just paying you back with money she borrowed from othe people
Ulti was right
Not directly, but I've done things for my parents/brother where I'd pick something up while shopping for myself, and they pay me back for it

Works better than just directly giving money because the ability to hold on to (thing they want) until I get the money means that I'd almost definitely get my money back even if my immediate family wasn't generally trustworthy about this. If I ever did just give money directly, it would be under the assumption that I would not get it back.

I did lend $1500 to a friend a year ago, I have yet to see it back
He will give it back though...but I will have hard time lending money to other people after this

Congrats to BKSheikah , 2017 Guru champ.
If I ever lend money I consider it a gift, and any repayment also a gift
No problem!
This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
I only give money.

I give money because anyone asking me for money needs help, and forcing them to pay me back doesn't help them.

Yes, a friend of mine owes me like $50 for buying him groceries and giving him rides to see his son at the hospital.

But I don't really care because it was for groceries and seeing his son.
I have in the past when I had more to give, I don't anymore because I don't have anything to give.
I used to more often but now i don't unless it's like my mom or something like that.

And you know what is the most annoying thing
We are in the same Whatsapp group and he just loves to talk about himself and about how much life he has
Well good for him
But this life also means he has to spend money on parties and vacations and stuff like that
And I just can't read that shit without getting mad
But what I can do? tell him "don't live your life, you owe me money"?

I'm not in a place where I can lend money without expecting repayment as soon as possible so I generally don't.

i lend money to my work friends all the time, and always get it back. which enables me to always borrow money when i need it, too.
Remember, BK_Sheikah is eternal - all this pain is an illusion
I've lent some to family before. I gave my sister $500 when she had car issues and don't expect to ever see that money back, but hey family is family no big deal.
Rarely if ever now.

That includes Family.
I'll get back up for good this time and I ain't comin' down...
I only lend with the idea that I may never get it back.
Congratulations to BKSheikah for winning the guru

I understand but there comes a time when people, especially family will just milk it. We've all got one or two financial vampires in our gene pool.

I loaned one of my best friends about a grand in rent money (we were living together at the time) and she paid it all back as soon as she could. That was back when I had disposable income though, can't do it now.
Congrats to BKSheikah , who knows more about years than anyone else.
Sure. I mean not to like any person in the world but I've lent some money for like food if someone didn't have then sure. A couple times I've given larger sums to close friends who were in serious financial distress but those were gifts, not loans.

However, if we agreed to go in on something like a hotel room and you wait until the last possible second to tell me you can't go [therefore increasing everyone's share to pay] then I will think twice before taking you seriously next time.

I don't like loaning money to people, since there is no guarantee I'll get it back, and I'm not exactly the kind of person who could enforce it. So generally if I do give money to people I don't expect I'll get it back, and if I do, it's a pleasant surprise.
