oh boy

the only time i've thought of it is as a fictional (i.e. referring to fictional characters), fetishistic term. it refers to only outward physical appearance and not to gender identity. it is not synonymous with trans.

you'd have to ask someone who is trans, no?

but my point of view has been that trap is only used to refer to fictional characters. i would never refer to a trans person as a trap because their gender identity is irrelevant in this situation.

Yes, I'm very offended by Sjw's being offended by everything...
Trap isn't really used outside of hentai is it? Either way, echoing the fact that it applies to dudes who look like girls, not actual trans people.

I would say trap is only really applicable for those situations where a character is presented as one gender and then they go "Surprise! I'm transgendered!" So it's a trap because you are led to believe one way in order to surprise someone with the reveal. Otherwise it's transgendered.

When this thread started, I had no idea what the potentially offensive rendition of trap was, and even after hearing it, I think it's stupid, so my real answer is "no, wtf are you talking about?"

A trap is either a mechanical device prepared to ambush someone, or it's the muscle to the side of your neck. Occasionally I might use that nomenclature to refer to the trapezoid method when teaching calculus.

i'm sure there are. if you look at /r/traps for instance a majority of submissions is from self-identifying trans girls who have seemingly co-opted the term at least to some extent. and of course it doesn't represent all trans mindsets. but i'll still maintain the stance that it's a term used in the context of fiction that does not have to do with gender identity. like futa or dickgirl that are common enough tags but something you wouldn't use to describe a person.

but then again what about some aspects of crossdressing? if there's someone who identifies as male but crossdresses with the intent to appear "convincingly female" would that be okay to call a trap?

considering it's mostly used as a dude that is so convincingly a lady, nah.
even if you were to refer to it for trans people, it's honestly a compliment to say that you pass so well that you're indistinguishable from a very attractive woman.

yeah no. Some people might not get offended, but it's a very backhanded compliment. In fact, you probably shouldn't tell any trans woman "you make a good woman". It's like saying "for an Asian girl, you're pretty cute".

Just tell them that they ARE a beautiful woman, no qualifier necessary.

what about saying "you have the most totally awesome kickass penis I've ever seen on a chick" is that a legit compliment or a backhanded one?

There's also the implication of deception, though. The normal meaning of trap is something you wouldn't want to walk into. I guess I think it's a fine thing to identify as, just not an identification to give to others if they don't want it.

I really have to disagree with this entirely due to framing.

The term "trap" is framed as such to suggest that a straight man was "trapped" into being attracted to a "man". When used on a fictional character like Bridget, sure whatever that works. When used on a trans woman it's pretty insulting for two reasons.

1. Trans women are women, not men.
2. The idea that trans women are wearing women's clothing just to screw with straight men is pretty bullshit. A significant portion of trans women are lesbians not even interested in men.

If you're thinking "but that's not what I mean when I say trap"--I'm sure you had great intentions but if you don't want to be misinterpreted, maybe you should use a term with less ambiguity?

Anyway if I had to guess.... maybe if it's applied to an actual person? At the very least it's probably a bit rude.
I think it's fine if the subject isn't actually transgender but just "dude looks like a lady."

But yeah, azuarc pretty much got it that there's too much ambiguity.
