Best Luthor since Clancy Brown. You could feel his hate.

Clancy just fucking owned as Lex, it's true.

And Hoult is a phenomenal actor.

He makes me think too much of Stewart from Letterkenny. Really took me out of the movie.

Hot take but I think its a top 5 comic book film villain performance, next to stuff like Heath Ledger Joker and Josh Brolin Thanos. Very memorable and lots of fun.

I'd have to see Superman again but honestly, this might be a take I can agree with

I haven't seen the movie, so I can't really judge. But there's a scene in the trailer that takes me right out of it. Where Lex is walking through an area with drones and stuff flying around him and one blows up literally right in his faces and he has 0 reaction to any of it.

I know it's supposed to show his single minded pursuit, and that he's completely focused on whatever he's walking towards, but I cannot watch that scene without rolling my eyes. It would've been fine if the one didn't get wrecked like 1 inch from his face.

^I believe it was to show that he's such an arrogant, know-it-all jackass that he knew the damn thing wasn't going to harm him because he was in control...which is Lex Luthor to the T

What sells it is while he's sometimes cartoonishly evil, but he really comes off as emotionally invested in what he believes in. He actually sheds tears because he genuinely believes his unhinged xenophobia is a force for good in the world.

Yup, he has another moment just like this in the movie when Superman flips a table in front of his face and he just maintains an air of smug and calm superiority.

Gunn and Hoult did an incredible job of making this Lex so damn hateable that you just want to punch him in the face.

He was great. I also really like Superman and Loiss take on Lex. This Lex would eat Eisenburg Lex for breakfast lol

I can understand him behaving that way with superman directly. But there was shrapnel flying off those drones.

I just can't see that scene in the trailer and not just think of how it was recorded and green screened in. If it had happened just a bit further away from him, if he stopped for half a second to let it get destroyed then continue on his way I don't think it would take me out the same way.

But like I said, I haven't seen the movie so maybe it is just the one scene I'd have issue with, and perhaps in the bigger context of the full scene it wouldn't be so distracting. Everything else I've seen looked great, except the lady with saw blade hands seems kinda silly.

Still can't see Hoult as anything other than Tony from Skins.
It's kind of a Lex movie in the sense he drives all the pieces into motion so that accentuates his great performance

I'll admit that's the first thing I think of when I think of Hoult's work. But he's more than proven himself over the years to be an excellent actor.

Not a knock to him. It's just that that show is so imprinted on my mind.

I think it makes more sense in the context of the scene. By that point, you get a sense for just who makes up his ranks.

He had super-powered, unwavering henchmen doing the dirty work for him. As an audience member aware of what they were capable of (and Lex's safety being their priority), I also didn't feel Lex was in any real danger, communicated by his unflinching progress into the room.

I took him not flinching as him being so smart he could calculate the trajectories of the shrapnel and knew he wouldn't get hit lol

he was so good in fact, that it almost felt like a Luthor movie with Superman as the antagonist. he was so good

I really wish they kept John Cryer for Superman and Lois. I know they were separating the show from the arrowverse but Cryer did a great jobm

I guess. It just killed it for me. Like, if he had just glanced away, or put confidently out his hand up to block any shrapnel as he continued, or stopped for just half a second to let the attack not land directly in his face.

I know I'm just being nitpicky, but to me only reads as he's not reacting to anything because nothing was happening while they recorded it. Feels like he was instructed to walk intently towards something and that they chose to add everything else after without telling the actor.

Idk, I get the sense that Lex almost sees himself as untouchable and thinks he's too "important" for anything bad to happen to him. Kinda like Griffith.

It's why he's so quick to press the buttons of someone who could easily snap him in half at any given moment.

I humbly disagree. Jon Cryer was a huge miscast imo. He brought absolutely zero charisma to the role

That was honestly one of the coolest moments in the whole movie for me tbh.

This is a great example of how he is such a piece of shit despite claiming to be doing all this for the good of humanity. If Clark was half as bad as Lex pretends he is, he'd throw Lex through a wall.

But Lex knows he's a good person, so he knows he can get away with talking shit.
