If you ask me to craft the perfect mental image of what Superman looks like in real life, my brain will immediately spit out Christopher Reeve.
I know part of it is because he was the Superman I remembered from my childhood, but he basically IS Superman for me (
and
Clark Kent - his Clark was iconic as well). And I've judged every single Superman since by his standard (and most of them have failed for one reason or another).
The only other one who's ever been close is Henry Cavill, which is why I feel sad that he was given absolute dogshit to work with. I can only imagine that in an alternate universe where Cavill got to be in well-written movies that were properly directed, he'd be the most iconic Superman. Alas, we don't live in that world.
He's in good company though. For both Doctor Who and James Bond, I'd definitely say that my favorite
actors
as the character also tend to have some of the dirt-worst scripts, so they're never appreciated as much as they should be.
