How come they just don't play the originals?

My favorite elevator music moment was sitting in a dentist office and the elevator music version of the song Pussy Control by Prince came on. It both doesn't exactly lend itself well to a purely instrumental version and it's pretty inappropriate for the setting. Also, it's not exactly the most well known Prince song for people to recognize. Purple Rain is right there and a perfect fit
I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.
I doubt the dentist has a resident DJ picking the songs.

They'll use a commercial background music service that includes licensing. The cheaper packages feature covers, recorded especially for that purpose.
