The PS4 remake is not great, especially when you compare it to the original PS2. Tons of levels are missing and Ratchet's character has been changed so much that he doesn't even feel like the same person any more.
Ratchet is supposed to be an unlikeable dick in the first game, it's part of his character arc and you see him become a hero at the end. But he's already a kid with a heart of gold in the remake.
Yeah, the remake fucked the game up bad. They got rid of the light Metroidvania aspects to it. They based the story on the movie, but they cut out a lot of the story from the movie, so the story in general just doesn't make sense. I also didn't love that they turned Drek from an intimidating Lex Luthor-type into a used car salesman. And I especially hated that they had Nefarious
upstage him in the final act
. I flatout do not understand Insomniac's love for Nefarious.
It also never, ever, ever shuts the fuck up. It has so much "witty" banter that it can overlap on itself. By far the most baffling decision in the game was to give Qwark two lines for swimming and then have him use them every. Single. Time. You start getting low on oxygen.

The series in general has been pretty kiddified which is just weird to me. Rift Apart was fun, but the story was pretty puerile power of friendship nonsense. The thing is that the gameplay doesn't really match the target audience of the story; I'm a grown man and there were things that
I
found challenging in that game. That's especially true of the remake, sections of that game are just brutal.
