I'll be real with you. There are times where you can feel the poor optimization. Some background NPCs have about five frames per minute, certain areas on the map (say, around large bodies of water) will just randomly start to chug and lag, and while I personally haven't run into many bugs or glitches in the game nowadays, that doesn't mean it's fixed.
But the story is still pretty good (for a Pokemon game) and doesn't get in the way quite as much as past games, there's not nearly as much hand-holding as past generations, and some of the new Pokemon designs are fun. Plus, some of the fights can be rather challenging, though they're not impossibly difficult.
