Damn I want a kitten now. How much work are they compared to dogs?
I second the get two thing, unless you already have a cat or dog they can bond with. Despite the loner attitude, cats are very much pack animals. The overwhelming majority of cats will naturally take to a litter box, other than a first set of shots if you keep them indoors they dont really need more, and socializing (having guests) can help them be less shy but isnt mandatory. Beyond that, toys/furniture designed to be scratched, at least one toy they can pounce and hunt, and maybe discouraging them from bad habits like clawing furniture.
Thats a really detailed list that sounds like a lot, but theyre considerably simpler than puppies. I cant take care of a dog right now, but I can manage two cats. Even preventing bad behavior works best with passive deterrents, things that will automatically spook them or make them uncomfortable, so you just set up harmless traps and go about your life.
No matter our origin, we are all one family, we all share one planet, and we all need to feel loved and accepted. We are more alike than different.
