The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill beat out Thriller for the number one spot.

which is insane to me.

Some of the albums on that list are definitely choices! That's for sure.

I enjoy both Frank Ocean and Kendrick, but you can't tell me that Blonde is a better album than good kid, m.a.a.d city lol
i7-13700K, GIGABYTE Z790, EVGA XC3 3070, 64GB G-SKILL DDR5, LG 32" 165hz 1440p
Android/iPhone/Mac/PS5/Series X/Switch, Oculus Rift S, Quest 2
did to pimp a butterfly not even make the list

I was going to say that the list was crap when I saw Kid A in the list, but they redeemed themselves by having OK Computer at a higher position.

Still, a lot of greats are missing (seriously no Queen?) and too many artists I simply dont care about.

I like the list a lot.

It's not my list, or even close to it, but it's an interesting selection of the classics that appear on every list, a handful of more recent albums, and a few surprises.

These lists are good for sparking discussion and getting people to listen to something new. They're never definitive, and they aren't bad if they differ from yours.

if it was framed as a list of 100 great albums the discourse would be much different than it is.

But saying its the 100 best albums and putting some of these on here while leaving out some incredibly obvious choices is wack.

Respect Robyn even being on the list, feel like she's never even considered in these kinds of things and Body Talk is 10/10.

'Best' is just rhetoric to hype the list. There's never going to be a 'best'. It doesn't bother me if they call it that.

And it's just boring looking at the same old lists of the same of stuff all the time.

I mean yeah I agree it can get boring looking at the same lists but I dont think Taylor swifts 1989 re-recording as a top 20 album is particularly interesting lmao

Some of the choices here just dont have business being in a top album list at all, thats my problem with most of it lol

There's definitely some strange choices.

Like, is II really the best Zeppelin album? Really?

*thinks about it*

Actually, yes. Maybe.

Badmotorfinger is a better grunge album than Nevermind
It's missing anything country at all. I'd at least throw in something like Willie Nelson's Stardust or Johnny Cash's The Man Comes Around.

Not gonna lie, I have no idea who the 1st place artist is.

Anyways the list mostly makes sense, they were obviously not gonna throw in any curve balls like The Human Equation by Ayreon since stuff like progressive rock operas are not commercially viable. But as a list of 100 albums people should know of it is fine.

I do think the biggest omission is Boston's self titled album

Isn't Kacey Musgrave country or did she pull a TSwift and start leaning more into pop?

Legit surprised to see The Strokes on there, as they're one of my fav bands.

Not so surprised, but happy to see The Cure make it, Disintegration is an easy 10/10 album.

Aquemini is a fantastic album too, so it was cool to see here.

Dark Side of the Moon is GOAT tier, so being as low as it was kind of surprised me. And being the only Floyd album on the list was kind of shocking too. It's among the best selling albums ever and was on the top 100 longer than any other album ever, feel like it deserved more love here than 28.

Discovery is another all timer for me, so happy to see it ranked in the teens.

Beastie Boys making the list but for the wrong album was kind of weird to me. License to Ill was legit non stop bangers. No idea why Paul's Boutique was put in over it. Maybe along with it, but definitely not over it.

One thing Ive noticed recently is there has been an effort to make these lists more inclusive/less male dominated than they historically have been, which is great.

but popular music journalism was so sexist, for so long, that there now isnt really a consensus on what classic albums from women should make these lists, so they default to super popular more recent albums

so while the list is generally balanced by decades, it feels like a disproportionate number of albums from women on the list are the mega stars from the past 20-25 years. So many women of like the 70s and 80s are forgotten entirely

idk I think the efforts towards inclusion are great I just dont think music journalism in general does a good job with it

I don't mind Lorde and Beyonce on the list.

That is pretty much expected, my post was saying they are not going to include something like that because it is from a niche genre.

Horses is at #83

i dont think those albums are bad or anything I just think there is definitely recency bias when it comes to women artists on these types of lists

or rather, music journalism has spent so long not actually taking music from women seriously that they have no idea how to rectify that

You're absolutely right about that. Sane can be said for entire genres. Past lists have had a huge rock bias.

In the UK of the 80s and 90s, Kate Bush used to get nominated for 'best female' at music awards every year. Whether she released anything or not. Pretty much because they couldn't think of another 'serious', 'credible' female artist (they weren't looking).

'Vinyl is the poor man's art collection'.
These lists are stupid because they tell us nothing. This is just a random conglomeration of mostly decent/good mainstream albums of the past 50 years.

There is no point to discuss or debate. Opinions cannot be wrong, so its silly to say, but the nature of this list is silly in the first place so the overall discourse thst comes up when these lists are released is stupid.

Only people to get more then one entry are Beyonc, Prince, Radiohead and Beatles. So theyre definitely leaning towards the most representative albums and not the actual critically acclaim or retail best album. Hence the weird choices.

But the real question is, is anybody actually going to peep any records on this list if youre into the genre? Playlist linked on the bottom with a DJ mix. Seems to play one verse only.

Im finally going to check out Prince I guess, was definitely more into Michael growing up.

I've gotta agree with TheGoldenEel on this. Paul's Boutique is unquestionably their best record.

Licensed To Ill made them famous, but they weren't taken seriously. Paul's Boutique changed that.
