Would have been more useful in the era of combat where ground troops were the primary threat and not drones with thermal imaging, I imagine

Whats wrong with that? Technology often exists in fiction before reality, so it gives people an idea of what its like.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction has to make sense.

This blocks thermal imaging according to the video. Ground troops are still a threat..

Use that stuff as an exterior layer over the armor, spaced out at around arms length from the video, by a bunch of reinforced struts.
