Saw a game on Steam with the Boomer Shooter tag. Apparently people are calling retro 90s FPS games like Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein boomer shooters now.

God damn...

Yeah, and the guy who made Dusk and his friends really meme'd it into power.

those games don't require 16 red bulls, 4 adderall and 2 hollywood lines to be able to move "efficiently"

I wish they'd actually follow 90s FPS design instead of just being monster arenas. Would be great to get co-op play back in too.

FPS games with always-facing you sprites and the same two textures of wall and floor and your head constantly bobbing up and down are fucking NAUSEATING to play. I get people didn't have any other choice 30 years ago when Doom came out but goddamn

Moving efficiently in old games actually requires quite a bit of skill. There's more buttons to press in newer games, but that comes with timing leeway. Good bunnyhopping and momentum abuse is old school stuff.

Doom was better than some of the older things and alternatives. Like Catacomb 3-D and Wolfenstein. And Last Rites ... and H.U.R.L and Tekwar. There was a lot of shit FPS games in the 90s.

Boomer bump.

Also this is the game I referenced in the OP. Played the Steam demo and it's so over the top.

Thought of this as soon as I clicked the topic. I'm buying it the second I get home... Assuming it's Steam Deck compatible. Is it?

Call them what you will, but they're some of the funnest games these days.

I'm currently re-playing Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun and it's a fucking blast.

Prodeus and Ion Fury are another couple that I played recently and enjoyed a lot.

No idea. Just a heads up in case it matters to you but the game is currently in alpha. Didn't realize that until it mentioned it in the demo. It's on sale by a couple bucks so I might go ahead and buy it but wair to play it.

Prodeus is a must play if you're into that shit.

I think it was Mabus that recommended it to me but it's legit the most fun I've had playing a shooter since OG Doom.

Ah, gotcha. I'll check when I get home. If it's a no go, I guess I'll just be forced to keep playing Hades II

When I hear that I dont even think of those, but like Unreal Tournament. We need a whole damn genre of UT clones, as UT 2004 beats the hell out of everything since.

Those are known as Arena shooters. "Boomer" use to be called "Classic" or "Retro" shooters, but I guess times change. TOXIKK, UT Alpha, Quake Champions, Splitgate, Lawbreakers; unfortunately it's dead a genre.

I know. But people tend to lump arena shooters into boomer shooters.

That doesn't even make sense, when I read those titles I think Gen X to the core.

My dad is a boomer who played computer games in the 90s and he played things like Mech Warrior and SEAL Team.
My metal band, Ivory King, has 2 songs out now - allmylinks.com/ivorykingtx (all of our links there so you can choose which one you'd prefer to use)

Boomer is internet slang in this context. Like one of the reasons boomer as a word blew up was the joke phrase "the 30 year old boomer"

Yeah they really should be called Gen X shooters (Romero and Carmack are both post boomer era), but boomer is a meme and rolls off the tongue a bit better.

Anywho, absolutely love the genre. Some of my favorite games right up there with rouge's and sandbox builder games (Minecraft, Terraria etc.)

If you're a fan of Duke Nukem, I'd definitely recommend Ion Fury.

I think the difference is that boomer shooters are generally single-player affairs akin to Doom or Quake, whereas arena shooters are multiplayer-focuses ones akin to Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament.
