For today standards its pretty much pop rock. Could probably say the same thing about Black Sabbath. They were pop rock back then as well, you had harder bands than KISS. Their look just sold them as much harder than they were.

I like a very wide variety of music. They come from an era of music that I love. But they are one of the few bands I absolutely just can't stand and will never understand how they have such a devoted group of fans. The "Kiss Army" I will never understand. It's because they put on a great live show with high production values. Kiss, along with Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd, really raised the bar on live musical performances in the 70s, with the costumes, set pieces, lighting, pyrotechnics, etc. Sure, they're a little campy and cheesy, but that's all part of the fun, and they are a tight, very well rehearsed band live.
I understand music is subjective and varies from person to person so much but yeah I will never like Kiss.
