There aren't really any micro transactions or predatory game mechanics. Only thing to spend money on is cosmetics.
Rage is a hell of an anesthetic.
Blizz will need to give me actual money to play that.
If you're not smart enough to survive, you are basically just food for something smarter.
I haven't played since season 1, but it wasn't very appealing to me. On the other-hand, I really liked D3.
The monetization is almost entirely for cosmetics. Though, there's an expansion expected to be announced soon.

I don't want to poison your expectations. Go in and see if you like it. The story has some amazing cinematics and the environments have a lot of work put into them. The gameplay generally feels very weighty, which was a design goal since early development.

When is this "free period" you speak of, cuz I'm not seeing any news about it.

That said, season 4 is when the biggest changes for the game yet are taking place, so if the free shit is before s4, then no?

Right now the blizzard launcher told me

Bumpity. Haven't played since day one or two of Season 2 since I wasn't really enjoying the endgame progression. Not sure what all is new between then and Season 4, but I'm having fun with Barb again. Almost as much as D3.

Helltide mob density is insanely fun, gear tempering is a fantastic addition, and I'm glad they improved the Codex of Power to how I expected it to be at launch by making every affix available (from what I can tell).

Just like D3, Blizzard is taking baby steps to make it an enjoyable game. Fuck the microtransactions, though.

Ultimately I don't want to do that right now and don't know which is worse, but I bought this game fully knowing I would have no friends to play it with

I played it for two days at launch and haven't touched it since. Maybe things change after Act 1 but I was underwhelmed at the copy-paste settings, like there's always the same basement and the same little fortress mini-dungeons and the world felt bland.

Also I was kind of spoiled by other games, especially Lost Ark, and the gameplay flow between characters in D4 didn't feel that great, interesting or novel.

Overall just a bland game which is a shame because the cinema scenes and story felt like they had promise.

It is pretty good. About as good as later Diablo 3 I'd say.

Is it any good? I've never played a Diablo game tbh
Imo you're better off playing Grim Dawn (great story) or Path of Exile (great gameplay), or trying out Lost Ark which does get grindy and micro transactiony at some point but up until then it's a good ride with interesting classes to choose from.

Diablo was good at establishing the genre but it hasn't been interesting since 2, and that was mostly because there wasn't anything else on the market to compete with it.

Season 4 just hit

It's a pretty solid action RPG. Most builds are pretty straight forward with your basic generating Class Resource, your Core ability consuming class resource, and then 3ish other abilities with timed cooldowns. There's an array of viable* playstyles. Graphics are pretty good, cinamatics are amazing per standard Blizzard.

*Peak 5% of the content calls for some heavy min-max stuff with on-meta enhancements. You're fine doing your own thing for 95% and being good enough with any modicum of synergy and self style preference

Once you're "locked in" with your desired skill tree and abilities the gameplay can get a little same-y as you just push up towards higher levels and more difficult dungeons and trying to farm up better gear.

I like it more than Path of Exile(!), but the last time I played it was 2016-ish with the Maps system. Didn't like the difficulty whiplash where you went from "beat up everything on screen" to "dead in 1 hit" almost instantly, around level 70ish.

Just know, to me, you're better late than never again.
The beginning is really fun, endgame stuff not so much.

The game was definitely front-heavy so maybe playing during the free period is the best way to go. Get your fill.
