Im not familiar with hockey officiating but you can make an argument for the other three for sure. Baseball umpires might just be the worst refs between the sports but its not like the other two major sports are totally competent either.

I just wonder which of these refs could theoretically influence a game the easiest without it being too obvious.

Easily baseball. You can't challenge anything they do and if you complain they throw you out of the game.

Also hockey refs basically don't do anything except offsides & power plays. There's like a bazillion cameras around the goals and that's the only other place anything contentious happens.

While a hockey ref could throw a game by sending the whole team to the bench it would be really obvious.

Thats a great point. Baseball umps are usually the main group I hear associated with being replaced by robo refs

Easiest to rig? (Baseball)

Or easiest to rig and get away with it? (Basketball)

I don't know about the Braves complaining about the 1997 NCLS. Maddux, Glavine etc. always got great treatment from umps.

Probably Football or Basketball. They take the fewest actual calls to alter a game. Baseball, you need to alter balls and strikes quite a bit to actually make an impact. Hockey seemingly has the most perilous penalty's for a bad ref call, but they aren't that often.

But a Roughing call in football can dramatically alter an entire game. Same for a holding call. NBA is the same. Calling a charge or block late in a game to give free throw shots late in a close game can all but change the outcome.

More than that with the NBA is the ability to simply put a star player in foul trouble early and often. One player makes the biggest impact in basketball compared to the rest of those sports. A few ticky tack calls can take a star player out of a game for large stretches and completely change the odds. Thats before you start adding free throws in favor of one team.

The order goes as is:

Baseball > Basketball (especially in today's weak af rules)> Football > Hockey

I don't watch soccer so I'm not gauging that shit in the equation.

Baseball umps can rig a game blatantly and not face any punishment for it whatsoever. They have the most powerful union on the planet after the police.

Baseball easy. There is already video of stupid wrong calls by the umpire and they can't be challenged. Easily them.

Football would be the 2nd easiest in my opinion. All it takes is to turn a blind eye to a penalty and it can mean the difference between a 10-15 play drive and a 3-6 play drive ending up a TD. And the same can be said to defensively screw a team over.

Baseball only wins put cause you can't really challenge the umpire.

People are really underestimating how horrible hockey refs are. I get that it's the lowest rung of the totem pole when it comes to the big 4, but it's refs are garbage tier, especially in international competition.

Nah, baseball umps are just that fucking scummy. There's videos of umps telling players and coaches that they can do and say whatever they want and they don't give a fuck.

Outside of like five cities, MLS isn't popular enough to consider a major sport in North America yet.

Baseballs tough because you cant throw a flag on a home run. Or a double. And so on. Sure the ump could be awful but a pitcher is still gonna throw strikes and if its hit, theres nothing you can do about it.

I picked football. Long awesome TD for a team you dont want to win? Whistle. Flag. Bring it back. Look at all the holding that didnt get called for the chiefs, think theres an extremely blatant one right in front of the camera on the final play. Ref wants them to win? No whistle. Ref doesnt want them to win? Whistle. Every single play in football can be changed because of the ref.

The old adage is that every single play in the NFL has holding, ya know? I guess only the blatant or egregious ones get called

Rigging the whole game is difficult and likely to be noticed.

Most of the problems come from spot betting on events within games. In football/soccer, that's things like number of yellow cards or the time of the first corner kick. And it's almost always the players doing it, not the officials.

That's true too. Getting that 2nd foul early in the 1st quarter is almost a death knell for a team.
