The industry has boiled down the voices, ranges, topics, melodies, chords etc that are the most reliably successful and just mix and match those. This is especially easy in the era of streaming, metrics, and analysis. It's just about producing the sounds that most reliably translate into money. That leads to a narrowing of the variety of types of artist that gets pushed.
But at the same time, tech and the decentralization/ability to self produce and self publish injects new blood so we can find cool, unique stuff if we really want to.
