Bagels should be good enough to be eaten untoasted. If your bagel needs to be toasted to taste good, youre eating cheap bagels. The good ones dont need it.

Yup, bagels, toast, and sandwich bread should be very slightly brown. If there's any black or dark brown, it's burnt and you might as well throw it away.

Good (NY/NJ) fresh (same day) bagels should not be toasted. Fresh bagels from any other locale may be toasted. Older bagels from any source should be toasted.
Also: The correct amount of cream cheese is an unmanageable amount.
