I disagree, especially now since I've owned my home for the last several years.
I don't want traffic coming in and out of the house at all times of the day or night. So if you're going to be living in my house I don't necessarily need "permission" but the least you could do as a courtesy would be to drop a message or note about it.
You can't just do whatever the hell you want in my house while living rent free - don't care how old you are. Don't like it? Easy solution - get your own place.
As a homeowner with a kid that is of "Adult" age, but still in high school, kinda this, but not to that extreme.
Since she's in HS, we know my daughter's school schedule, including which days she has to stay late for athletics. She also shares her work schedule with us via a shared schedule on all of our phones. Her and my wife are also close enough that she doesn't (to our knowledge) feel the need to hide where she's going, so whenever she leaves, she doesn't ask for permission, but she'll usually let us know where she's going and ask if there's anything she needs to do before she leaves.
If she suddenly stopped doing that? I don't think I'd jump right to kicking her out, but a conversation would be had.
I was pretty much the same with my parents up until I graduated High School. They still knew my work schedule, but since it was before cell phones, all they really knew was that I was going "out" after work and would only have to call them if I was staying out past 1 am. But once I was out of college, that ended until I eventually moved out when I was 23.
