https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/08/world-scientists-climate-failure-survey-global-temperature

Hundreds of the worlds leading climate scientists expect global temperatures to rise to at least 2.5C (4.5F) this century, blasting past internationally agreed targets and causing catastrophic consequences for humanity and the planet, an exclusive Guardian survey has revealed.
Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), foresee at least 2.5C of global heating above preindustrial levels, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit will be met.

Many of the scientists envisage a semi-dystopian future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck.

Numerous experts said they had been left feeling hopeless, infuriated and scared by the failure of governments to act despite the clear scientific evidence provided.

I think we are headed for major societal disruption within the next five years, said Gretta Pecl, at the University of Tasmania. [Authorities] will be overwhelmed by extreme event after extreme event, food production will be disrupted. I could not feel greater despair over the future.

Gee, I wonder who will the deniers blame and persecute as living conditions worsen, since they say it's impossible for human action to change the climate (tip: immigrants and people who aren't white)

I feel like this is a much too important article to make with a memey title like that.
I'm going to miss shifting gears but I'll accept the necessary endgame.
Anyone who doesn't agree is part of the problem.
Ehh, I've already made peace with the fact we're completely fucked.

If you've been paying attention the seasons the last few years it'd be pretty obvious things are going sideways. I can only hope when we eventually get our shit together Earth can heal herself relatively quickly.

Still can't believe we never began tackling climate change during the height of COVID when haulting all unnecessary travel and going remote where possible led to a drop in carbon emissions.

We are not a serious species.
We'll start when it's too late. Millions of people will die, but hey turns out you can put a price on lives.

I imagine though there will be some scientific mechanical solution to stem the temperature increase, and things will continue as normal.

It'll help this century, but will probably just kick the can down the road so in the 2100's or 2200's we as a species will still have to deal with it.

Where is Al Gore when you need him.
The 1% are building bunkers for themselves to hide when it goes down. They already jumped the shark. Instead of spending money to help they prefer to hide away.
Above all things, never be afraid. The enemy who forces you to retreat is himself afraid of you at that very moment.

This is one of the reasons why its bad to have ancient people in charge. Politicians who won't be around when the bad stuff happens, have no reason to try to fix things. You think Trump gives a shit what earth is like in 50 years?

The good news is that the Earth can heal itself just fine. The Earth is hardy and has gone through a lot worse than what humanity is doing to it. It has natural processes in place to reduce the carbon in its atmosphere.

The bad news is that process has a tendency to cause mass extinctions. So we will not be around to see the healed Earth.

Figuring out? Its already happening. Look at Europe.
I don't understand what the end goal is. It's a given that we're looking at multifaceted societal collapse but how does this play into the elite making the world a place where they want to live? Playing devil's advocate if I were a multibillionaire I would hate living in some kind of luxury enclave or bunker knowing that the rest of the world is literally burning.

what's sadder is that the older generations wont care because they're like "dude, i'll be dead when shit hits the fan so it wont affect me!"

not saying everyone thinks like that obviously but there are those who do. such selfishness... smh
You know what we need? More global climate conferences for activists, celebrities and politicians to fly all around the world to attend. Thats what we need to fix this.

Seriously though, it is so depressing to know this is happening and have so little power to do anything about it. I try to be as green conscious as I can but even if I somehow became completely carbon neutral, Taylor Swift alone would out produce whatever I could cut in my whole lifetime in about a month.

I meant more that news of scientists expecting major societal problems like food disruption should be in the title so that people who wont click into vague titles can still see it.
