Is FFVII remake even an RPG?

  • The action is mostly live action. There's some tactical command queuing
  • There's no character skill choices at all
  • No character role choice at all. You are cloud, these are your stats
  • There is some very basic weapon upgrade progression, but (at least for me so far) it's very linear
  • The world is super linear. I've been going down a hallway for 10 hours straight. I imagine it will open up a bit later.
I'm enjoying the game but I don't think it's anymore of a role playing game than God of War is.

RPGs dont need to be an open world Ubisoft/Bethesda snoozefest. Linear is good.

I didnt play the new one yet, but its definitely less of an RPG than FFs that came before it.
Was OG Midgar not also a hallway?

Also it's more RPG than 13,15,and 16 combined

Action RPGs exist
You get choice with Materia slotting and levelling weapon skills
Preset characters don't stop it from being an RPG
Weapons are not linear upgrades
Linear or open world is irrelevant to the genre

It's an RPG
It's more of an RPG than FF16 is.

The weapons still give access to skills, and you can focus characters around certain builds.

And Remake is just as linear as Midgar was in the original. Not that linearity is a trait of an RPG anyway.
...I think I'm done here...

It is funny because Rebirth gets compared to Ubisoft games for its design quite often lmao
It's an ARPG. Welcome to the era where cinematography is largely prioritize now in big budget video games, sometimes even more than the actual gameplay. Funny how some games get a pass on this and this game isn't.
Don't like it? Don't watch it. It's that simple

I don't think it's bad faith. Sometimes people are legit curious on what other think.

What's your timeframe here, because I've been using CE as a ranting blog for at least a decade

Also to be clear there's nothing bad faith here, I really am this unpleasant

That tracks. Last month my girlfriend tried to kill herself, my alcoholism got out of control and my car broke down irreparably.

Things are getting better though. I'll be back to regular old nonsense in next month's installment, if we still have a board by then.

Zelda games are RPGs. Tons of games are RPGs that you normally wouldnt consider. The terms RPG or JRPG or SRPG or whatever are typically used to give you an idea of what a game is like;
oh, its a JRPG, so I know its similar to other games with the JRPG label.

The vast majority of JRPGs arent actually RPGs, as you dont get to make any meaningful choices, whether its in terms of story or character growth. Thats why I consider the term a misnomer, as theyre more like Interactive Adventure Stories with progression mechanics.

To clarify, I dont think this is a bad thing as I find the lack of choices to make refreshing as an adult with no time. Im just saying, to me an RPG is something like Baldurs Gate, Planescape: Torment, Fallout: New Vegas, etc.

You can beat it using the command and not dodging or anything and just healing like the old days.

No reason you would have known, and also not on you to pick up the crap. <3

It is definitely an RPG albeit a more guided experience. There aren't a lot of opportunities to grind levels and while there aren't "classes" per se there are opportunities to make Cloud a caster or Barret a Melee (granted they aren't the best for that). Materia really comes into play to decide how you want to play. Equipment isn't as complicated as many WRPGs but you do have stats and options to consider. On the easier difficulties your decisions aren't as critical but they definitely matter in hard mode.

It's an action RPG. Different subgenre than OG FF7 but still the same major genre.
I fought the Trumble and the Trumble won.

rising is a prequel but it has little bearing on the main game

thoe its still very good if you want a metrodvania with town building mechanics

Rising is set before Hundred Heroes, bit is really more like a spinoff game. I haven't played the second one yet, but the first isn't a suikoden style turn based rpg, it's a sidescrolling action rpg. The combat is a bit simple and some of the side quests can be a grind, but I found it fun and pretty good especially the characters (of which there are only a couple you play as) and light town building aspect a lot of fun. It definitely sets up some lore for the main game hundred heroes and some characters, but I suspect it going to be skippable. Only took me like 26 hours to platinum so it's not a long play and is pretty cheap to grab

It were me I'd say give it a try but if you don't like it you don't have to feel like you can't skip it
