Poor guy lolCloud, like many a character, goes through a maturation arc in which he's a much more likeable character by the end than at the beginning.
He's actually not that bad of a guy to hang out with, as long as he's not going through one of his emo routines. I remember him being pretty upbeat by the end of the game, after he's worked through his trauma.

It's not a bad game. My only gripe is they shoehorned a romance in when it woulda been perfectly fine and simply a bromine
Hell they even gave you dilagoue options to make it seem like noct didn't give a shit about the romance but he suddenly greatly cares at a specific story point.

Not gonna go into details but I feel it was an arranged marriage and that's why you where given options to act indifferent about it. As for why he acted like he cared all of a sudden despite if you chose to act indifferent I just chose to feel like it was because the situation made him feel powerless to protect a single individual let alone his country.
The biggest problem I had with the game, at least with the romance story, is they hinted towards Noctis and Iris being something, and then poof... gone.I didn't play the game after the first couple months so I don't know if they brought her back in some sort of DLC, but her disappearing after the time gap just felt weird.
