'MericaI guess the video was what i expected. Thought he would say something in the beginning about his thoughts but then again expected a giant jerk off to the platform...so yeah.
lol get fucked TikTok
we don't want your shitty inane social engineering
I am not well-versed in TikTok but what I have seen doesn't seem to be particularly egregious for a modern social media platform.
For everyone that doesn't seem to understand how bad TikTok is, here are just a few things -
Tiktok pushing self-harm content via algorithm
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/apr/04/how-tiktoks-algorithm-exploits-the-vulnerability-of-children
One former employee alleging that TikTok user information is not safe from China

Another employee, this time w/ more evidence -

TikTok is uniquely awful, even for social media. It's awful in virtually every way, and there's nothing good that it provides that can't be handled by another existing site / app.
Tik tok, and people doing tik tok challenges are terrible. So is reality television, and yet we don't let the government ban it
Remember the questioning that preceded this bill was senators calling this guy a Chinese communist repeatedlyYeah, Shou Chew is Singaporean. He explicitly had to tell them he wasn't Chinese.
I stand by what I said.Perhaps you shouldn't
lol get fucked TikTokWe'll just get an American version one way or another.

Racists, politicians doing corrupt things, famous people, non famous people doing things they aren't supposed to will fucking love this ban. This app exposes them all. I wouldn't have learned about a lot of these scum if it weren't for Tikok. It's not social engineering, safety or other excuses people come up with, it's about information suppression. Hopefully Tiktok finds away to exist some how for years to come. Those who think the app is just dances and challenges are clueless and exactly what politicians love, clueless people reacting to government sponsored misinformation

Facebook's algorithm locks you into whatever alt-right, antivax, trans-murdering, government-toppling echo chamber you want. There's nothing "unique" there.

And the Privacy Wars have been lost for over a decade, now. China has all the info on anyone they could ever want. So does Russia. Taiwan. India. And they happily trade it with everyone else. There's nothing unique here, either. And There's no correcting it. That ship hasn't just sailed, it's carried Frodo and Gandalf off from the Gray Havens; it's not coming back.
Youtube definitely USED TO have a lot of issues, but I can't recall seeing any in the last few years. They cracked down hard on stuff. Their algorithm isn't nearly as aggressive in pushing harmful content, and Youtube has more options for parental controls, from what i understand.I have some news for you about Twitter, if you're gonna be outraged about bigoted and dangerous content going around with no oversight.
While all of our tech companies and our government doing it is bad - I find it difficult to somehow not agree that it's worse if another country - especially one such as China. I don't think I've said it in this topic, but I'm not a fan of any of the data collection and algorithm based crap, and wish we'd do something about that, too - but that doesn't mean TikTok doesn't deserve it.
There's no information you can get from TikTok that you can't get elsewhere - and you're going to need to go to better resources to actually get any details on stuff anyway. It's cool if TikTok exposed you to new information, but you could have just as easily gotten that information on Twitter, Youtube, or Wikipedia, just to name a few.You can get that information elsewhere sure, but just as easily or as fast? Not really. Twitter used to be good for breaking news but then Musk bought it. Maybe the youtube or facebook short things are a good alternative, but outside of those and tiktok there arent many good media platforms left for rapidly spreading important information.

Twitter has always been dogshit, too, and definitely worse under Musk - but most of the Nazi stuff that people know about still being on the platform, they literally only know about it cuz organizations dedicated time LOOKING FOR IT. Most of the tweets in those had less than 100 impressions. Realistically, no one was seeing it. It should still be gone - but it's not getting fed into peoples shit unless they're looking for it.Bruh Alex Jones tweet about Hitler being bad had a comment section filled with people upset that he didnt praise Hitler. It is absolutely not that hard to stumble upon
Bruh Alex Jones tweet about Hitler being bad had a comment section filled with people upset that he didnt praise Hitler. It is absolutely not that hard to stumble uponIt is, but it's easy to just not purposely seek it out and fill your algorithm with the toxic stuff. My experience with Twitter has been mostly positive.
Insane how many people truly want to live in Communist China.

China will do anything and everything to become the strongest nation in the world. They absolutely should not be trusted.
Did I get teleported back to the 80's? The exact same rhetoric used against China today was said about Japan back then. It was common for American politicians to use anti-Asian slurs and encourage destruction of Japanese made cars/electronics. An innocent man of Chinese descent named Vincent Chin was murdered because two laid off auto workers mistook him for Japanese and pummeled him to death. They never served jail time and were simply given probation. It's really sad to see history repeating itself. No one is calling for violence of any kind, and we aren't in a war with China so what the fuck are you even talking about?

This conversation is about the Chinese Government having direct control of an app that millions of Americans are currently using. They will exploit and abuse the information they are gathering. Whistleblowers have already come forward to warn us about this. Banning the app is the correct thing to do until they sever all ties to the CCP.So are we pretending that TikTok is giving them anything they don't already have, or...?

Please don't be xenophobic. Reminder that the hateful rhetoric coming out of our government has stoked anti-Asian racism.I'm anti ban. This ban is something China would do. Not America.
