It's a bit more complicated then that. Squatter laws exist so that land not being used doesn't just sit around unused. Someone who owned land stops using it and it never gets sold for someone else to use or ownership document has been lost to time.

Exactly.

Squatters laws have been around for almost as long as the US itself, but was originally intended for it to cover literal "land" not being used by the owner, and not homeless people breaking into unused houses and apartment buildings where the owner may be mid-renovation or in the process of developing to attempting to resell the property.
It takes zero effort to be a good person.
