Relax I know what I'm doing,I been killing topics since 1987
Paper Mario, with a small shout out to Mario RPG on SNES. I rented Mario RPG a couple of times from blockbuster and loved the idea of just... exploring the world, talking to people, etc.

I would say RPG lit the fuse, but Paper Mario was the dynamite.

FF8 was my favorite
Earliest I remember playing were Ultima VIII and Super Mario RPG, though I didn't realize Ultima was an RPG at the time

D&D tabletop got me into the game genre, then Ultima IV got me into the video game part of it.

It started with text based adventure games on PC like Zork and then evovled to Wizardry. On console though Im another one that started with Dragon Warrior (Quest) as a young teenager and then a year later Final Fantasy. I was hooked from the start. Its still my favorite genre.

Dragon Warrior was first, then after playing that I had to get Final Fantasy, and I've been an RPG guy ever since.
Every day I wake up and promise I will be nice to everyone, then I deal with people at work and remember why that will never happen.
Probably Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior

After reading this topic I'm wondering when the "RPGs must have character stats!" seperation to adventure games was made.

I got that compilation pack that had 6 CDs, featuring 6 different AD&D 2nd Ed. games. It had Dark Sun in it, I absolutely loved that game. I liked D&D before, but Dark Sun gave me a whole new appreciation for the genre.

well it was primarily meant to be adventure with action. most rpgs you dont control your character. also, you dont really level up in Zelda except 2 (which could be called an RPG i guess), you just get equipment and heart containers.

Dragon Quest when it was localized as Dragon Warrior thanks to my mom starting my subscription to Nintendo Power.

Culture brain also made another action jrpg on the NES called little ninja brothers that was a more light-hearted game, but its the very first jrpg I remember playing that supported 2 players from start to end.

Guy, Zelda is an Action RPG.

The only exception, here, is if you strictly use the definition Gary Gygax (TSR's D&D co-creator) used for tabletop Role-Playing Games, which are group-based, cooperative, and face-to-face live.

"If you are not role-playing as a character to another person [in the same game], who are you role-playing to?"

It also means you also accept that, to-date [as of 2024], there are no video game RPGs--only simulations.

Super Mario RPG back on the SNES when I was a little kid, it was my first RPG game and I didn't like it at first but it grew on me.

Zelda 1 took after Adventure, the 2600 game that combined the action and adventure genres. Action being the genre in which you fight/avoid stuff in real time, and adventure being the genre all about finding items to get past obstacles.

A typical action game for 2600 might be Aquaventure :

And a typical Adventure might be Swordquest :

And as the combination of the two, Adventure :

The fact that both RPGs and action adventures have things like NPCs and upgradeable stats is largely by coincidence. RPGs get them from their tabletop origins, while AAs get the pickups because, well, it's an item you pick up that helps you with action gameplay. Just like the square guy in Adventure picks up the sword in order to fight the dragon (yes, that arrow is supposed to be a sword), except you don't have to put it down. And the NPCs are just well-polished means of giving the player direction on where to do/what to do and story stuff.
There's a difference between canon and not-stupid.

The OG Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) initially indoctrinated me into the RPG genre. It was interesting but very difficult and grindy so I never got too into in it. But as higher quality games came out during the SNES era like FF6, Secret of Mana, and EarthBound, I got pretty hooked on them.

Final Fantasy X. I still remember seeing it for the first time. My buddy had just gotten it on the day of release, and we were getting together for DnD and video games that night. Since a few of our DnD characters were split up, he and I weren't playing the first part of the session. So he popped in FFX to kill the time until our turn was up. By the time he got to the intro Blitzball cinematic, the DnD game was completely forgotten and we all ended up just watching him play for like 10 hours straight that night.

I was driving our DM home the next day and just pulled into the parking lot for GameStop without saying a word. We each bought a copy and the DnD campaign was officially put on hiatus for like 2 weeks while everyone just wanted to play more FFX. Been in love with the genre ever since.

See out the mods that focus on the other warlords. Wu is real hard. They put tigers right out side the starting town. You have to grind and go back in the town multiple times to get strong enough to head to the next area. I got to the place where you have to use explosives but forgot where to find it. I gave that one up. The original I played multiple times

There wasn't a specific one. I just preferred RPGs because you get the most playtime out of those games than any other genre.

Do you know what the first Japanese console RPG was to officially use the term "RPG" in its self-descriptions (ads, copy, and instructions)? The answer might surprise you.
