The 6th console generation is PS2/Gamecube/Xbox/Dreamcast. One of the worst offenders of the generation is Xenosaga.

its especially handy when it comes to referencing a time-periods graphical-capabilities

a number is added to the overall-amount only like once a decade these days, so it really shouldnt be that hard to remember

Also, 3D graphics were rapidly getting popular, and games needed to stand out. What better way to go from a buzzy meh sound of Ice 3, to the sharp crashing of large icicles and it's eventual mystical shattering with Blizzaga

FF9 has some of the best spell/ summon animations and sfx in all of gaming

I used to enjoy those slow magic attack animations. Top of my memories were the summons in FF VII, VII, and IX. I used to be in awe whenever I used those summon monsters. Now, geez I can't stand games that have long animations like these anymore.

After FFVII JRPG devs decided that the genre's competitive advantage was flashy visuals. I didn't mind the "filler" when I was young. It was impressive and my mentality to passtimes is completely the opposite of what it is now; instead of needing things to "respect my time", it was better if it filled up the gaping black holes of boredom I had back then as much as possible.
