Not exactly true. Things becoming mainstream a lot of the time ends up removing some stuff that made it good in the first place to accommodate the newer players. I can understand why people hate stuff becoming really popular

I think there's a difference between the fans of something gatekeeping it and execs looking to appeal to the mainstream, and changing it.
the execs are already going to do that, if they're profit focused/don't feel like something is appealing to enough people.
