I'm really stupid, why does selling 5 million in day 1 make a game casual? Did they all watch a friend play and go buy it later that day?
This is a cool sig

They may have heard them constantly talking about it all the time, and decided to try it I remember people talking about it non-stop before it came out

gatekeeping doesn't make things better for you, it just deprives others of something they might like.
Eh there's knock on effects of big increases in popularity for something on its community. It's not hard to view gatekeeping as a rational action in that context

Not exactly true. Things becoming mainstream a lot of the time ends up removing some stuff that made it good in the first place to accommodate the newer players. I can understand why people hate stuff becoming really popular

I get it. But I kinda feel the energy they put into moaning about it is inversely proportional to how much free time they have. Like I get it. You dont like the changes because it ruins your nostalgia. But the way some people go on its like the worst news theyve heard that day. I dont get why youd ever care that much about media.

Eg the GameFAQs Best Game Evar poll lol
oh yea, I've acknowledged that it can negatively impact the "culture" around the thing, or at least, how members of the "in-group" feel about it.

how so?

I think there's a difference between the fans of something gatekeeping it and execs looking to appeal to the mainstream, and changing it.

the execs are already going to do that, if they're profit focused/don't feel like something is appealing to enough people.
