My high school US history teacher called them "God waves": at various points in US history--usually every 100 years or so--there's a wave of hyper religious, puritanical fervor that sweeps the country. Last time we really saw it (before the current incarnation linked to outright fascism) we got prohibition.
So just keep that in mind if you ever think that they won't try to eat your face.
