It's taboo enough now, soon enough the new generation will be wondering what there is to it. They'll give it a chance, do social gatherings at Sunday schools to see what it's all about, and before you know it, it will be a staple in people's memories again.

Christianity and other religions are not really taboo, they are just a joke. Most prominent Christians in America tend to be massive hypocrits and that's only the smallest problem compared to the religious conflicts going in in other countries where people are being killed for being part of the wrong religion.

The only way religion will become en vogue is if entirely new non-cult faiths get propped up taking on relevant spiritual tropes and theories on the afterlife.

It'll probably happen, but not because the young people actually want to be there. Instead, I suspect that the Republicans (and other far-right authoritarian parties like them around the world) will use their power over the state to legally demand church membership and attendance of citizens, effectively putting a gun to people's heads and forcing them into church on Sunday.

My high school US history teacher called them "God waves": at various points in US history--usually every 100 years or so--there's a wave of hyper religious, puritanical fervor that sweeps the country. Last time we really saw it (before the current incarnation linked to outright fascism) we got prohibition.

So just keep that in mind if you ever think that they won't try to eat your face.
