Traditionally it's a sign of opulence and wealth, so I see the logic there, however in modern times the food the poorest Americans eat tends to lead to obesity because the cheapest food is also the worst for you, so I think that script has flipped to a certain degree.
Although they're saying it's embarrassing and repulsive, which seems to be different than it being a sign of wealth/capitalism.
