Which did you prefer?
SA2 still is.
Show me the Champion of Liiiiight,
I'll show you the Herald of Darkness!
Theyre both still some of the best Sonic games.
I missed the part where that's my problem.
We grew up and objectively see how the game really plays.
I believe in the Golden Rule and you should too!

"The games I grew up playing as a child were amazing! Now decades later younger people are saying the games they grew up playing as children were amazing instead. What happened!?"

Jeez I wonder? Looks like we got a mystery on our hands that Culumbo, Batman, Sherlock Holmes, Frost and L combined couldn't solve.
^ Hey now that's completely unfair!

Pretty much this. Look no further than Pokemon. It's why the "best pokemon game" keeps jumping 1 gen every couple of years.

Whenever people call games masterpieces and really big them up, it's usually a warning sign.
There's still fun to be had with SA1 and 2 though.
Still waiting on that third threat
i prefer SA1

They were never very good.
The Chao Garden is better than some entire games and I will never change my mind.

Your reply reminds me of this, lol. Just randomly came to mind for me.

Chao Garden 2 was always the best game in the sonic franchise. The sonic stage shit relegated to a minigame to collect resources for the true game
1st one
I'm a Taurus. Currently playing: Dragon's Dogma 2 (PC) & DMC3:SE Ubisoft Port (PC)

They still are masterpieces, younger gamers don't appreciate most classics now days

I think they're both fun. Especially the stories. Incredibly goofy

Same. It's like sonic has always been okay with some stinkers. The adventure games are fine.
Literally no one ever considered them masterpieces. Even when it came out I was fully aware of the janky, bad controls and physics bugs. I still think SA1 is fun for the most part though.

I really liked both. Not sure which one I like better overall since they both have their pros and cons. I do think I prefer SA1's overworld over the stage select screen. Although replaying through stages to get all of the emblems was definitely easier with SA2's stage select screen.

Honestly, this.

None of the 3D Sonic games are great - and I include the Mega Drive one in that - the best they can hope for is "yeah, that was decent compared to the others."

SA2 kinda stinks. I have the GCN copy from release and it was mixed back then and impenetrable now after not having touched it in nearly 20 years.

I played them both when they came out. They were absolutely not masterpieces. It's just Sonic has become such a shit series with mediocrity being the best we can hope for that they retrospectively seem like a masterpiece for a Sonic game. Actual masterpieces from that time are still appreciated today, even by young gamers.
Favorite Games: BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Bayonetta, Bloodborne

It was like a 6/10 when it released. It had fans and I trudged through it back in the day. But half the stages are miserable. The controls, physics and camera are awful.

"Masterpiece" is pushing it, but I always loved SA1. It has some pretty bad glitches, a couple of instances of nonsense stage design and they really should have tried either harder or less had with the story and cutscenes (either would have been fine tbh). But for the most part, it's a lot of fun, at least for most of the characters (Big the Cat's fishing is fine once you get used to it; it's Gamma that's the real stinker)

SA2, well, it's not like it was terrible, but it was a noteworthy step backward. Stage design was more frequently frustrating, it had a number of bad gimmick levels, they made Knux/Rouge mode super dumb by making you find the pieces in the specific order, and it had a DOUBLE DOSE of Gamma's shooter nonsense. It was ok and all, but 1 was a much better game in my book.
There's a difference between canon and not-stupid.
i personally never considered them masterpieces but i still enjoyed them.
Sega fanboys finally came to grips with their denial.

I don't remember Adventure 1 getting that level of praise, before and now. Its was always I the love it or hate camp.

Adventure 2 though? I distinctly remember being out of the Sonic loop, then all of a sudden everyone was talking about Adventure 2 like it was a new pokemon game. There was legit dozens of kids all talking about Adventure 2 and it's Chao garden

Was wild tbh

People still love it, but personally I think Adventure 2 is only 1/3 of a good game. Treasure hunting and robot shooting is lame and eats up more time than the Hedgehog Stages
Lmao I thought the reviews were mid. This thing got reviewed decently apparently? I'm guessing the GC port got slammed because I don't remember good reviews at all. Then again I was barely on the internet back then.

Die-hard Oakland A's fan --- Keep the A's in Oakland!
Ive played and finished both 100% on Dreamcast, GameCube and Xbox Series S. still great games. SA1 is a tad more rough due to worse voice acting, more awkward movements in cutscenes and some parts of Sonics levels werent designed well around his speed but they are both very fun to play, still.

My most wanted game for the Xbox store is Sonic Heroes.

Pretty much this. Adventure 2 was elevated by it's style and the chao raising on the GC version. Still bogged down by most levels not Sonic or Shadow centric.

Having played it as an adult, as my brother and I created a Chaos Chao not 2 years ago, it's still fire. And surprisingly robust.

SA2 literally peaked on level 1. The best stages were the Sonic and Shadow ones!

I played SA1 after playing SM64 to death. It was quite the variation at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The soundtrack also helped. Sonic games has some of the best ingame music imo

SA2 is a flawed game that is still fun, runs well, and has charm in the story. Game works, despite weird characters and cheesy story.

SA1 is a dated game that would be universally panned if ever released today in that state. Game is glitchy, janky, ugly, and even the cinematography is awful.

This. Just bring back the Chao garden Sega. It's really not that hard.

Okay but I'd just like to point out "if it was ever related today" is a really moot point.

Like yeah if SA1 as it is now came out next to God of War and Elden Ring of course it would be universally panned.

Fact is standards were just different back then.

I kinda liked all the level types in their own ways. the clues in the treasure hunt levels are fun ideas and it's interesting planning strats for the mech levels to get points for the a rank
