come on, that guy compiled a list and put actual effort into a gamefaqs post, and is being decently generous not counting su to be the same thing as s

i say good work

thank you sir

The better question is why did Ryu in street fighter stay Ryu instead of some Americanized Roy, meanwhile m bison and Vega got weirdly switched?

Because m bison was Balrogs name and they feared a lawsuit from Mike tyson

okay well gyarados for example sure isn't an english word so other names fit even your new criteria
best I can do is give you nidoran and kabuto

I should have guessed kabuto was a japanese name thats on me

gyarados is literally what you are describing, it's a name based on japanese words that stayed the same in english

if you're not going to accept gyarados you're just making shit up as you go at this point

It was localized tho. Pikachu was not. That was another constraint I meant. But what does gyraradosu mean?

I just didnt think this topic out very much.

how can a japanese word end in S? there is no S in the japanese alphabet

if you translate the japanese characters directly into english letters, it becomes "gyarados"

if you then try to translate english "gyarados" back into japanese, but keep english letters, it becomes "gyaradosu" or whatever because japanese can't handle english letters the same way. but the actual japanese characters translated/romanized directly into english letters are just "gyarados." it only changes when you try to go backwards into still english letters but under japanese rules

Oh so they have the ability to end a word in the S sound without a vowel sound but only in Kanji? I always assumed N was the only exception

Do some words ending in su have a silent u sound?

it's like this

like you said japanese doesn't end in s, it's su
but when you directly romanize, su is just s, period

there was no "localization" since gyarados is just the literal romanization, just like pikachu is the literal romanization
I beat Call of Duty 4. In one day.

yes but they dont have a "letter" for just the S sound without a vowel sound attached

right because su is s

pikachu doesn't change because the romanization is literally identical. they didn't intend it that way, that's just how it worked out. they were gonna name it based on those words regardless, just like they named gyarados based on the japanese words they chose. the only actual difference is that su becomes s

if you try to split hairs between an unintended consequence i'm just gonna assume you're trolling again, which to be fair i should have expected since you admitted you troll so much you can barely ever even post here

I thought they remove the "u" just because it sounds more natural to English speakers or w/e.

Let me use another example. The second boss in the Wind Waker is called "Kare Demosu" in Japanese (afaik it doesn't mean anything). In English it's called Kalle Demos. I figured they changed Demosu to Demos because it sounds better in English, not because "Demosu" would actually be an incorrect way of romanizing it.
Let's-a go! Okey dokey!

"S" by itself doesn't exist in Japanese. It can't be Demos, the s needs to be accompanied by a vowel. The reason we know it's usually just straight up an "s" when romanized is due to the intention of the japanese word/name.

I get that when a name is clearly supposed to be an English word it would be incorrect to add the vowel.

But in that example, since the name doesn't actually mean anything, neither would be incorrect. Is that right?

"shoes" in japanese is "kutsu." Japan isn't localizing "shoes" into something else, that's just how s works there.

It can be, but when they write names, they know when certain characters will be romanized as an "s" for example so they use those characters. like for example the proper romanization of gyarados's name is "gyarados," just like dugtrio's romanization is "dugtrio" and so on. They did it intentionally, it wasn't left up to localization to decide to drop anything.

Laziness, the same reason why English speakers don't usually pronounce the i in business.

As a side note Cobra, and Polygon are as much Japanese words as they are English words.
