so japanese didnt have a word for Dig until the west showed up? that's odd

They did, but it's a different word in Japanese. It appears that for whatever reason, they didn't make the name ACTUALLY "Dug" and "Trio" in Japanese, they specifically made the Japanese name a literal translation of the english "Dug" and "Trio," if I'm understanding it correctly. For all 35 names, they intentionally made them translate to the exact same name in both Japanese and English. The 8 named (Pikachu, Nidoran, etc) are just the ones that have an actual perfect letter for letter translation, the others don't because Japanese can't use the letters the same way and still make the same word, otherwise they'd be the same, too. So for example Porygon and Porigon were intended to be the exact same but when you translate the kanji or whatever into "Porygon" you can't translate it back into "Porygon" because Japanese can't use y that way, so it has to become "Porigon"
