How prevalent are laser weapons in a non experimental context, will this be a first for actual deployment to a warzone?
Is there any other time in a modern democracy where large numbers of citizens complained that their government wasn't enough like a tyrannical dictatorship?
More good news for those on the side of Ukraine.

they're probably more secret than experimental at this point. the most difficult thing about a functional laser is the power source, which the military has had plenty of time to work on

random ass people have been arrested for shining lasers at planes, all that needs is significantly increased power to be a weapon
I could see you, but I couldn't hear you You were holding your hat in the breeze Turning away from me In this moment you were stolen...
Multiple countries have been working on laser weapons, and other directed energy(such as microwave) weapons for a few decades now. And while the programs themselves are secret, for obvious reasons, their existence arent

Russia's military death toll in Ukraine has now passed the 50,000 mark - the BBC can confirm.
In the second 12 months on the front line - as Moscow pushed its so-called meat grinder strategy - we found the body count was nearly 25% higher than in the first year.

at this point putin has basically just signaled that he will stay entrenched in ukraine to save face. he has basically no chance of actually toppling the ukrainian government and is just throwing tens of thousands of russian lives away to maintain his poorly crafted and crumbling facade.

the west has to keep sending aid to ukraine. russia continuing to fail and languish is not only a moral and ideological victory, it is a strategic coup that gives us more influence in eastern europe than the west has ever had. helping ukraine is the right thing to do but it is also the strategically sound answer as well. we have nothing to lose and everything to gain by continuing to help ukraine defend its sovereignty

Isn't the US still maintaining the war in Ukraine to save face as well? I mean the US has already said that it shut down the Istanbul peace deal and maintains the war in Ukraine in order to look tough to China because of long term strategic concerns over Taiwan. So I disagree about the US having nothing to lose.

But I agree with everything else you said. The US exploited divisions in Ukraine to start a civil war with the purpose of luring Russia to intervene in the conflict and keeping them bogged down in a costly unwinnable war that would drain their resources and pressure the Russian economy and cause tensions for the Russian regime. The plan is working perfectly so far. The ultimate goal is the collapse of the Russian state. Similar to the way Afghanistan was used to collapse the Soviet Union.

I don't know how it could not mean it that way. It sounds exactly like the Russia propaganda. Blaming the US for the Ukrainian people wanting a change in some attempt to pull Russia into a war?

He's definitely been more clever about it than past Putin shills, but couldn't help himself w/ baking in too much propaganda to pass the "naive" or "genuinely uninformed" benefit of the doubt barrier.

The US isn't "maintaining" the war.
They didn't shut down peace deals, Ukraine itself doesn't want a hollow peace deal that gives Russia a chance to rebuild and then attack again, since Russia breaks every peace deal when it's convenient for them and the only way to actually have peace is to defeat them decisively militarily.
And... guess I won't add my related commentary to that.

The US didn't start a civil war. Russia tried meddling in and controlling their government and they resisted it. This is just pure lies and propaganda.

The plan is working perfectly so far. The ultimate goal is the collapse of the Russian state. Similar to the way Afghanistan was used to collapse the Soviet Union.
  1. It's not their plan
  2. Their goal was never the collapse of the Russian state. Given the 6000 nukes in Russia, that would be a catastrophe. And for the first year, the West bent over backwards trying to find an "off ramp" for Putin so he could "save face"
  3. The US made the Soviets invade Afghanistan? Is that what they're teaching you in those Russian schools?

A Tu-22M3 strategic bomber crashed in Russia's southern Stavropol region on Friday morning, according to the Russia's defence ministry.
The ministry said that the bomber's four pilots had ejected, and three of them have been rescued while the search for the fourth one continued. It said the crash appeared to have been caused by a technical malfunction.

A Video shows the aircraft in a flat spin with visible flames from the rear of the aircraft. Ukrainian sources reported a shootdown.

Exactly, that's what I mean. How else do you defeat them decisively militarily?

former Secretary of Defense and CIA Director Robert Gates says in his recently published memoir: When the Soviet Union was collapsing in late 1991, [Defense Secretary Dick Cheney] wanted to see the dismemberment not only of the Soviet Union and the Russian empire but of Russia itself, so it could never again be a threat to the rest of the world.

Humble_Novice posted...
A thoroughly broken Russia can only mean good things for the world in general.

I hear what you're saying about the 6,000 nuke situation, but how else do you permanently neutralise Russia as a global threat? Do you really think regime change would be enough given that Putin will probably just be replaced by someone just as bad if not worse?

The choice that we faced in Ukraine and I'm using the past tense there intentionally was whether Russia exercised a veto over NATO involvement in Ukraine on the negotiating table or on the battlefield, said George Beebe, a former director of Russia analysis at the CIA and special adviser on Russia to former Vice President Dick Cheney. And we elected to make sure that the veto was exercised on the battlefield, hoping that either Putin would stay his hand or that the military operation would fail.

In other words, if Putin wants to keep Ukraine out of NATO then we'll make him fight for it. Russia has made a potentially calamitous strategic blunder, and imo this was a part of US strategy, but tbh whether you believe the US prompted it or Putin done goofed by himself it hardly matters.

I'm not sure if Ukraine can inflict a "decisive military defeat" on Russia by itself, sadly, the best we can hope for is to continue haemorrhaging Russian resources and cutting off their energy exports to collapse their economy, while supporting Ukraine to reduce Russia's overall military capacity. The problem is Putin is being re-armed by China.

Republicans: Stop spending money supporting Ukraine against Russia. Spend that to help Americans instead!

Democrats: Okay, let's spend that money to help Americans. What did you have in mind? Caring for the sick? Feeding the hungry? Housing the homeless?

Republicans: No, that would be socialism. Why don't you instead do something about the open border?

Democrats: Okay, we'll support your border bill, the toughest such bill in half a century.

Republicans: No, we don't like that, either. We're thinking tax cuts for the rich that will trickle down to working class Americans.

Democrats: But trickle down economics doesn't work, as proven the last two times you tried it.

Republicans: Yeah, we're going with tax cuts for the rich.

Russia's getting confident that their Manchurian Candidate MAGA Republicans will keep blocking aid to Ukraine and they can just attrition their way to victory.
They don't even want a sham peace deal that gives them all the conquered territory and neuters Ukraine's military to the point they'll have no chance when Russia breaks the deal later on. They're just gunning for total destruction of Ukraine as a country and a people.
Make no mistake what is at stake this November when you vote.
Ukraine aid bill passed finally Trump and his cohorts wanted language added that they have to payback parts of the loans but it was installed with other not great addendums
Just looking at social media, MAGA is mad with the 100 Republicans that supported the bill. Theyre all RINOs now, according to them. Glad to see the bill make it through the House.
Rep. McCarthy does not have the votes (14 times). Now, ousted!
