I can't tell if the people claiming "hawk" sounds completely different from "rock" are trolling

I'm having a tough time with this as well.

Especially the ones saying "it's not even close"

There's a W in hawk. They're completely different pronunciations.

You're either saying "hock" or "rawk", both of which are wildly incorrect.

It obviously depends on accent, but a quick google of "sock hawk rhyme" shows pretty much every resource saying they do.

As someone mentioned earlier, the bar for musical rhymes is lower so I'm pretty sure that plays into this.

yea sorry, ive had this convo a thousand times here and ive heard this argument as many times. its not gonna gel with me, ive tried. your version just seems so stupid to my brain

I'm not gonna say "rock" and "hawk" are exactly the same, but Nintendo clearly thought they were close enough to name the character that way on purpose and literally use "rawk" as a visual stand-in for "rock" in like every sentence he speaks.

So we can agree to disagree. I just certainly don't agree that they're NOTHING alike.

So some of you think rawk is pronounced the same as rock? Lol

"Rawk" is meant to be a joke word that is pronounced differently. Those of you pronouncing it the same are missing the point.

So you're saying they intentionally made Rawk Hawk's name not rhyme, and have "rawk" be a visual stand-in for "rock" whenever he speaks, intending people to read it and... Not think it's "rock?"

You don't have to agree with Nintendo's intentions, but they clearly intended it to be rock.

Oh, wait. I misunderstood the argument. You're saying Rawk Hawk does rhyme, but Hawk is said differently than Rock/Hock, and so the point is he's saying "rock" differently/like "hawk."

I could see that argument. That said, given that NoA is based in an area where rock sounds like hawk, I think the idea that rawk = rock seems more likely.

I am saying that when people say, "let's rawk", it is meant to be a joke pronunciation of "let's rock". I don't care what Nintendo was doing.

I honestly don't think I've literally ever heard somebody say "let's rawk" with some kind of different pronunciation, to be fair. I brought up Rawk Hawk because it was a visual example of something directly relating "rock" to "hawk" as if they rhyme.

I've only ever seen "rawk" written out, typically in some poser "cool" way, like when people replace S with Z yet still say s, like the Hardy Boyz. They still pronounce it "boys," but it's written/spelled Boyz.

Actually, I have no idea why I'm still talking about Rawk Hawk when somebody already brought up Sawk from Pokemon, which is "sock."

In practice, yeah. I moreso meant there is no like, weird pronunciation to differentiate "Boyz" from "boys," since I was replying to the idea of pronouncing "rawk" (when specifically used as a spelling for "rock") any differently than just... "rock." Does that make sense? Like, I've seen people spell it "rawk," but I've never heard anybody do any like, weird pronunciation, just "rock," or however long you wanna draw it out.
