Do they vote Republican? Because if they do, at the very least they're saying that oppression of minorities (as well as concrete plans to overthrow democracy) are not deal breakers for them.
Conservative news does the "I'm not the bigot, YOU'RE the bigot" thing constantly. Like, to the point where naive, isolated people could conceivably believe that republicans are trying to build up the black community. I hear my customers talk about it sometimes, and my customers are mostly old people who watch exactly 3 channels, and like headcheese slices a lot, because they lived through poverty times.
Like, it's essentially not too far from the same process that gets people into the various types of American-style Christianity.
