Yes, I think it occured this month.

Male lions and tigers do a lot more posturing and bluffing than fighting...

however, that is not the case when the male lions outnumber their rivals. They will often go for the kill, and they do it in such a merciless way you get the sense that it is the pinnacle of savagery in the animal kingdom.

My 2nd favorite cat is the cheetah.

About 500,000 years conservatively to 1.2 mya liberally

In 1900, before the natural world turned to shit, the carrying capacity of lions in Africa were about 200,000 animals.

I am not the best at math but I will make an attempt here.

In 1900 if there were 200,000 lions that means for all those adults, 1.6 million cubs were born (1 in 8 chance of surviving to adulthood).

A generation time for lions is about 4 years. On the conservative end, 500,000 years, that's 125,000 generations of lions. Multiply that by 1.6 million and that's 200 billion lions in Africa alone.

Don't forget we had European cave lion, west Asian lions and American cave lions.

Lion brothers would not be rivals and they would also not team with hyenas

There is tremendous overlap between the recorded weights of lions and tigers.

The problem is that we do not get a truly random sampling (and the weights are well within the statistical error of each other, meaning we cannot definitively say that one cat is larger than the other).

In addition lions and tigers can gorge themselves with some 80 lbs of meat in one meal. All weights must account for the weight of the food in their belly - a tricky science at best.

Yes , I do hate the NFL

Darker maned males have more testosterone. I do not believe that manes are for fighting. I think they are used to attract females and intimidate rival males.

All of the most recent measurements state that Bengal tigers are the biggest tigers. And they may also be bigger than lions but it would be by a very slim margin.

It is said that 690 lbs is the record for a wild lion and 857 lbs for a wild tiger. I have no proof and hunters always like to exaggerate their claims.

I can only make seven quotes so I took the quotes out.

A pride is made up of a group of related females. They typically don't leave their natal pride. Groups of cooperating males are coalitions and they are temporary. The males born in a pride will be evicted by their fathers. They become nomads until they are strong enough to challenge for their own pride. In this way related females and males separate to prevent inbreeding. There have been some rare exceptions to this rule though.

A series or roars, grunts, snarls, etc. Pride bonds are reinforced with head rubs and other bodily contact.

Fun fact: lions can count. If they hear roars from a larger coalition they typically stay silent so as to not challenge a coalition with numerical superiority.

Observe from a distance, be unemotional. One guy has been doing it for like 50 years. Conservation is as much politics as it is science. Local governments need to be invested in conservation to have the will to make it happen. Lions are considered vermin in many parts of Africa.

The Maasai regulary kill them. Lions fear them. Other tribes are more tolerant and lions seem to know this. As one of the world's charismatic megafauna the demand to study lions is high. You should probably start somewhere studying a less sexy animal and then be trustworthy enough to make your way to the lions.
